7.5 million pounds of chemicals released by SD industry in 2024 Most of the 7.5 million pounds of chemicals emitted in 2024 were treated prior to release and were within regulatory limits.

Wharf Gold mine in Lead, SD, is the only large-scale mine in the Black Hills, and — by itself — it is the largest toxic emitter in South Dakota according to data released by the EPA's annual Toxic Release Inventory (TRI).
