The Guardian has revised the article.

So bottom line: the Guardian article was extremely misleading in promoting the concept that the VA could deny treatment or terminate employment for Veterans & employees who were Democrats or unmarried. But the executive order did remove language explicitly barring that discrimination.

Not mentioned in the Guardian article, or the snopes report about it is that also dropped from protection is disability. I don’t know why that isn’t the biggest bombshell, especially considering that the VA primarily exists to take care of those injured and disabled in the service of the US.

Now, "national origin," "politics" and "marital status," among other items, have been removed from the list, according to the newspaper.

Prior to the reported changes, "VA hospitals' bylaws said that medical staff could not discriminate against patients 'on the basis of race, age, color, sex, religion, national origin, politics, marital status or disability in any employment matter,'" The Guardian reported.

Like many people, I was blindsided by the article published in the Guardian about the VA being able to refuse treatment to veterans who were Democrats or unmarried. I think I have a better understanding of the reality.
