Itβs not just about what you remove (cars, noise, dirty air). Itβs about what you add (people walking, a lot of bike parking, trees, outdoor dining, and room for kids to play safely). Amsterdam: 1986 and today.

Imagine all the space these people on bikes would be taking if they were in cars? Imagine the pollution, noise and emissions. Multimodal cities and urban greening is just common sense.
Paris is still a tight city with many streets that are just choking with cars. Despite the remarkable progress, thereβs still plenty of work to do making the city work better with fewer cars and more choices.
Paris & @annehidalgo.bsky.social are praised for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they donβt get nearly enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything theyβre doing is common sense.
Theyβre moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air & cooling the city.

Most regular people have no idea how restrictive zoning is in most North American cities.
Yes, we try to separate people from destinations. We mandate arbitrary amounts of parking. We treat any housing denser than a single-family home as an aberration that needs to be carefully managed.

It took me 5 hours and 30 minutes to get to Providence from New York due to train equipment and track issues. Meanwhile, high-speed rail in Spain could make the same trip in 70 minutes. Iβm done debating whether we should have fast trains in this country, itβs just embarrassing.

Central Paris bike-lane filled with people riding bikes.
Remember, Paris wasnβt βalways this way.β
Not that many years ago, Paris was choking in car traffic. And it wasnβt a safe place to ride a bike for transportation, so not many people tried.
This is new. This is a result of deliberate vision, and bold leadership.
