It shows Natalie Clifford Barney along with Eva Palmer and Liane de Pougy, both current or former lovers of Barney's, and other women dressed in ancient Greek attire during a performance of Équivoque, a retelling of Sappho's legend.

Additional Facts:

Her literary salon hosted all manner of artistic events, and it wasn’t uncommon to see a great deal of nudity—including Mata Hari, naked on a horse.

She continued hosting her salons for over sixty years.

It shows American writer Natalie Clifford Barney (1898)

Did you know?

In the Victorian era, there was a literary salon in Paris that welcomed members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

It was hosted by writer Natalie Clifford Barney, an out and proud polyamorous lesbian. Her salon was a rare space where guests were free to be themselves.

And you can find some notes in The Illustrated London News, Feb and March 1855 at the British Library. I found the story fascinating but could get my eyes on the gazette, where drawings were published - but still looking - still amazed you mentioned it today 🙌🏻 Awesome

A text-heavy graphic reads:
Writing the Occult: The Uncanny.
Our speakers do great things!
With 60 years' worth of speculative storytelling, there's more than a bit of the uncanny in the Whoniverse - and Chris Hawton's spent his lifetime immersed in it. "Chris from South London" joins "Matt from Minnesota" every month to read and discuss a book from the Doctor Who pantheon. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.
Writing the Occult: The Uncanny is a virtual event for writers & readers. It happens 18 January 2025. Details at writingtheoccult.carrd.co

The only images on the graphic are an image of a blue police box in the bottom right corner, the logo for the book club podcast at middle right, and a photo of Chris Hawton. He is a white man with long blonde hair, wearing a white t-shirt and smiling at the camera.

Writing the Occult: The Uncanny is blessed to have such talented folks like podcaster Chris Hawton, who's bringing us the fruits of his 40+ years of fandom to show how the uncanny can manifest outside the gothic.

A drawing of two floors of a house. On the top floor, a man is speaking through a tube the reaches to the first floor. On the first floor, a servant is listening to the tube.

Did you know?

In the Victorian era, a lot of wealthy homes had whispering tubes between rooms.

This allowed the wealthy to communicate to their servants through whispers, instead of raised voices.

Consequently, they also doubled as eavesdropping tubes. 😅🤫
