Finally, I’ll point out that some (rare) humans can’t feel pain. Their “pain receptor” neurons work just fine. That fact alone refutes the entire article — one fact which anyone writing on this should know, but this author doesn’t. Also, some blind people have working eyes and optic nerves.

For example, this is false: “the presence of functioning receptors is considered sufficient evidence of vision, olfaction, sound reception, and yet we have carved an exemption for sentience.” It’s so confused it’s “not even wrong”. There are no “receptors” of “sentience,” to start with.

Oh, and the article is, of course, a mishmash of vibe-philosophy and pop science which gets the neuroscience entirely wrong. It’s not even correct to say eyes=sight if you mean a conscious visual experience. The reasoning is not informed by the current science. Sensory neurons do not produce pain.

That’s nice but it doesn’t change the fact that the claims *in the post* are false.

This is not true. Responding to contact is not the same as feeling pain, which requires consciousness, which requires levels of neural complexity which many animals, such as insects and slugs, do not possess.

It’s difficult. The Constitution does not give them the power to arrest the president as should happen. If they declare that they will not obey these new directives and that they refuse to allow any among their ranks to be fired, what then?

Well, that was the 1950s and 1960s. My dad said it was different back then. Better training, tougher supervision (the agency was very concerned about bribery), and cooler heads. In his latter years he would often wonder aloud what happened to the training, why the needless aggression these days.
