What I always do on vacation: acquire books. And note new bookstores visited.

Humanism is not a panacea, a cure all, a magic pill. But it is a state of mind. It is not humanitarianism, or a religion, or regime. It is: a desire to control ourselves, an attempt to be human.

Thank you Sarah Bakewell for this lucid examination.

It’s a slow luxurious read so far. Just the thing for a rainy weekend.

Now starting this one. It’s on the list at the back of #onceuponaprime and I’ve had it in my library for a while, unread.

Clever, kind, funny, and mathematical. If you like math and literature, I think you will like this one…

When you write something, you pin a piece of yourself down. It's like nailing your pant leg down to the floor. Once it is written, you can't stray from it, you have to walk within the circumference established. The more public the writing, the deeper the nail is driven. Thus writing changes you.

This was one of my favorite works by Frances Yates. I like/appreciate/admire everything she wrote; even so, The Rosicrucian Enlightenment blew me away.

1. I'm NOT the sort of SF/F nerd who thinks everyone needs to read a "canon" of older works in genre like they're homework before they get to call themselves a fan, nevertheless the book I'm always mildly surprised when people say they haven't read it is "Snow Crash," which to me is era-defining...

Started reading The Day We Found the Universe. I continue finding unread books in my library. Not really a surprise, that.

As I gradually move from fiction to history, my scope widens. Classical literature is still my favorite. Mind you, with authors like Herodotus, fiction and history do tend to get a bit blurred.

*ahem* not weird at all. My dad had a fair number (very few of the Latin texts), but as a scholar, he was more particular about which titles were on his shelves. Me? I’m more of a magpie.
I only have one volume of Julian. I pick them up where/as I find them.

Books are good wherever/however they are. I love looking at everyone’s shelves. Even when I should clearly be doing something else.

Your little eye correctly spies my growing Loeb Library (the Greek green and Latin red) collection. Harvard/Heinemann. Cambridge would also be ok. But I dig the Loeb…
