If we’re not ready, and we clearly aren’t, why is the President saying that ships are safe to transit the strait?

The phrase “Spray and Wash gets out what America gets into” never hit so hard.
😬

Starting off his confirmation prep nicely, I can see. What a dullard.

Here's my bottom line:

Much of what they are doing is bad.
Much of what they are doing is unpopular.
Pushback is working.
We are winning.
Keep fighting.
Be creative.
Push for what you'd want.
Allow for insiders and outsiders.
Realize that change takes time.
Reduce harm in the meantime.

Exactly whose freedom is being enhanced by a war with Iran?

Again, to be clear, the Navy doesn’t independently entertain requests from private shipping companies for escort. Such a request would go to DoD, which would authorize such a mission, or not, in this case.

That’s true, and that is a thing that China has chosen to prioritize. The US will not do that. There’s no sense wishing that it would.

China’s cash rich government paid for that. That won’t happen in the US. You guys have to temper your ambitions. These things just aren’t realistic.

Association of American RRs studied this... The total investment required is over $1T... equivalent to nearly 47 years of combined net income from all six Class I railroads.

Not going to happen... ever.

Those aren't BNSF or UP's problems to solve.

I imagine the investment to electrify and buy all new locomotives would be cost prohibitive.

We don’t have battleships.

To be clear, the Navy doesn’t independently entertain requests from private shipping companies. That would go through DoD to approve or deny. So the headline should read “US government denies requests…”

So, was this like a shortwave radio broadcast from Tehran, or did they just use the Sleeper Cell Signal group chat? I have no doubt these kinds of operators exist, but the idea that whatever bat signal they use is being discussed in the media feels a bit incredible.

I’m sure he’ll warm right up to Trump and his imbecilic demands. 😂

Declare victory, end hostilities, resume pre-war status quo. That’s his MO.

Wait… the administration is selling a message to the American people about the war with Iran?

Many Americans can’t name the three branches of their own government. You needn’t wonder too hard about this.

They keep saying this. There’s zero chance we have enough Aegis capable ships to do this task at an acceptable level of risk.

Good read.

That seems unlikely in the short to medium term. EVs account for 2-3% of automobiles in the US. Their use is increasing, but it’s unlikely they’ll ever overtake IC engines during our lifetimes.

That's par for the course in a military campaign. Yes, it's tragic. Yes, our military goes to extraordinary lengths to prevent it, but it will never not be a part of modern warfare, and any single example doesn't refute the success or failure of the overall operation. It's silly to think it does.

That's not suitable for long distance shipping. Don't get me wrong, I love renewables where they work, but we have to be clear-eyed about where they won't. There is no foreseeable alternative to fossil fuels for air or maritime transport.

This headline should contain the words "falsely claimed."

Except for air travel, maritime shipping and militaries, which are some of the top consumers of fossil fuels. I think the US DoD is the single largest consumer, with maritime transport being the largest sector consumer. Currently, no viable alternative to fossil fuels for these.

That he unironically quotes THAT quote is just so fucking cringe.
