When I was a child / my heroes were grown-ups / and when I grew up / I saw that my heroes / had been children dressed as grown-ups, / and that heroes beyond that / were beings I could not begin / to imagine, as they / looked like ordinary people, / rather uninteresting.

Editor thoughts when rejecting a submission: this piece is great, but the vibes just arenโt quite right for this mag
Editor thoughts after submitting and getting a rejection: my piece must suck, nobody will ever love it, iโm doomed

"Susquehanna River Suites" by Michael Garrigan is a thoughtful, braided ode to the river my family lived beside and loved well for generations. Lovely essay.

@amygcb.bsky.social is inventing her own vibe in Child Craft, with Midwestern, surreal, sometimes austere hybrid work. "Tuesdays with Monkey Wards" and "Magic Mirror" both provide some good laughs and a lot to think about.

I'm pretty jealous, too--we're still a few weeks from this in my part of PA. This week was nice, but flowers are a ways off.

Dolly Varden char caught in the Kenai River, Alaska, where they are abundant. In September they aggressively take egg patterns.
Arctic char caught in a river in the Bristol Bay watershed, Alaska. It was a crazy day of fishing for multiple species.
Lake trout, caught in Bear Lake, Utah. Bear Lake has 4 endemic fish species but the lake trout is one of the few non-natives found in the lake. I kept it for that reason.

Largescale sucker photograh by Joel Sartore/Photo Ark. I caught this sucker for Joel while he was visiting Boise to photograph some zoo animals. He had a free day and noted he wanted to photograph more native fishes. We went out to a local stream and I caught this native sucker. It was photographed in a tank and safely released.
There's a sucker (myth) born every minute. These are not trash fish.
Suckers are native fishes found across N. America. They are essential parts of the ecosystem. They're cool fishes to pursue.
Photo by Joel Sartore, of a largescale sucker I caught for him to photograph (and release).
