Key findings:

🔥 Summer: Most heat flows toward glaciers, concentrated in the upper 150 m thanks to subglacial discharge.
🌀 Winter: Circulation is surprisingly strong but more 3D than in summer.
➡️ Two distinct winter inflow events: one cold & deep, one relatively warm!

🏔️NEW in @natcomms.nature.com: “High frequency of moraine-dammed lake outburst floods driven by global warming”

www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🤔There’s been lots of uncertainty about whether the number of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) has increased, decreased or flatlined in recent decades

Scientists hold up a 3m long graph Happy scientists toast the end of the project with sparkling wine Happy scientists in waterproofs gather round a trig point on top of a wet mountain

Celebrating the end of project #SLIDE the best way we know: getting really wet feet and looking at really long time series.

Nothing more pleasing than unearthing some ancient chunks of basal ice from the archive for a student experiment. Robyn's rig looks so sciencey!

I haven't checked yet, but I would expect a pulse as all the runoff and yuck passes through. We have N sensors here too and they showed a spike as the flood passed. I'll be interested to see how long your P takes to subside!

Graph showing dramatic increase in water level on 16-17 November

I've got a sensor measuring a titchy stream near Monmouth to support one of our citizen science groups. It's usually 20-30 cm deep, but went up to >2m in just a few hours during Storm Claudia! Thinking of everyone affected.

As the United Nations marks the 2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and the opening of COP30 in Brazil, I'm happy to have been able to contribute a chapter to a new UK National Commission for UNESCO report on "Glaciers and Ice Sheets in a Warming World: Impacts and Outcomes". (1/2)

Team SLIDE also features in this report. TL;DR: glaciers are changing fast, but they're not gone yet, and UK scientists are helping find out about it
