**Control: AWE Review** Man, I gotta play Alan Wake 2 Written by Ejsponge61 on 1 March 2026 (edited) Beaten on PS4 in 2 hours This was yet another really solid expansion, but I have a few minor critiques with it. This is obviously heavily Alan Wake themed, and he appears multiple times throughout the game. I loved the subtle ways this DLC connects this game to Alan Wake and vice versa, and it serves as a great lead into Alan Wake 2. In fact, lowkey, all I wanna do right now is play Alan Wake 2, but we'll see about that later, I might play American Nightmares and Quantum Break first. As for the story of the DLC, it's pretty bare, even more so than Foundation before it. I ran through this in about 2 hours, but skipped over the little bit of side content there was. That content seemed interesting, but at the end of the day, the main story is what I came for and it just feels very slight, to the point where it's hard for me to point to specific plot points, with exception to one cool revelation at the end hinting towards Alan's fate.

But what the game lacks in story, it has in great gameplay design. Much of the DLC is designed around light and darkness, using the former to fight through the other. This makes for a lot of dark environments that actively harm you, or house a Nemesis-style boss that can kill you near immediately. Instead of wide open arenas and windy halls, this game turns those arenas into spaces that feel as claustrophobic as those halls because you have to stay within the light to survive, and light is often hard to come by here. This focus allows for some engaging traversal puzzles throughout. At first I missed the more wide open exploration, but the new constraints did end up feeling fresh and increasing the tension. The new weapon mod was...fine. Nothing is topping the pistol for me, but the grenades did mix it up a bit, especially for bosses that needed the extra damage. But it was nice to, after platinuming the game, have new buckets to pour my resources into. Overall, this DLC was just a little bit more than alright. I wouldn't say this expansion made me love Control even more, but it did make the scale of the Remedy universe feel even more impressive than it was beforehand. I will make it a priority to play Alan Wake sooner rather than later, but I'm glad I can finally put Control to rest...or at least put my PS4 save to rest. Onto higher resolutions and framerates, finally!
