I believe the gap that is opening up is on the urban liberal left. Thatโ€™s the constituency thatโ€™s underrepresented in power. But it will take a coalition of the Teals, Greens, disaffected ALP left and what remains of the Liberal moderate wing to fight the dark forces taking over this country

What defines a โ€˜progressiveโ€™ inside the Liberal Party? Someone who favours the catโ€™oโ€™7 tails over nine? Pulls only one wing off butterflies? Wants us to go back to 1958 instead of 1948? Itโ€™s a fight for the Angry Old White Man vote.

Australia is a tax free gas and coal colony for foreign owned Exxon, Conoco, Shell etc. (Angus is perfect he used to work for McKinsey, which services them) the same reason Pauline Hanson is still a thing. The ALP will give big fossil everything they want BUT are building RE. This must be stopped.

I think the media environment has something to do with it. The media is almost entirely right wing, with a business model based on fomenting and exploiting resentment. The answer is not more blancmange centrism but a serious populist leftist alternative

As Guy Rundle frequently observes, the majority of Australians are now knowledge class small โ€˜lโ€™ liberals concerned at widening inequality, climate change, housing affordability and our grovelling to a failed US state. So why are the ALP, Libs, Nats and One Nation all competing for the cooker vote?

To be clear, not one single person sincerely believes that "from the river to the sea" is a genocidal or antisemitic slogan. They're just pretending to believe that in order to get new laws passed which crush free speech that is critical of a genocidal apartheid state.

Gets to the nub of the issue - the assumption among the Australian political and media class that the interests of Jews everywhere and those of Israel are synonymous. These were primarily Jewish AUSTRALIANS. There are Syrian Jews and Lebanese Jews and Iraqi Jews etc; None are Israelis.

Advance Australia purports to be 'grassroots' but the pro-fossil pro-Israel lobby group is actually funded by millionaires & billionaires such as Packer, Rinehart, Liebler. @sstephanietrann.bsky.social investigates.

Cory Bernardi, new One Nation pick, went to America to train in climate denial with #AtlasNetworkโ€™s Heartland Institute. This One Nation, like Farageโ€™s Reform, is a tool of reactionary billionaires determined that no fact will stand between them & profit. #Auspol

And before you shout โ€˜rich boomer living off term deposits welcomes rate riseโ€™, recall some of us have adult offspring priced out of the housing market. A rate rise, assuming it dampens prices, may help them get a foothold. So can gallery hacks retire the boilerplate โ€˜bad news on interest tratesโ€™.

Besides, if the govt really wanted to do something about home affordability it has the tools in its grasp to reduce negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions. How much longer is this charade going to continue??

And why this tedious persistence with the assumption that interest rates are domestically determined. Inflation in recent years has been a global phenomenon. It has very little to do with govt policy.

Apple & Google removed ICE tracking apps in their app stores.

TikTok reportedly suppressed videos criticizing ICE & the shooting of Alex Pretti.

Meta blocked Facebook groups tracking ICE & links to a database of agents that the government wants to keep secret.

Trump wants a weaker US dollar. But it might not be an orderly adjustment if Japan sells its Treasuries, which is probably why the Fed is offering Tokyo a swap line

Financial markets look to be on the brink. The surge in Japanese government bond yields last week threatens the โ€˜carry tradeโ€™ in which funds borrow cheaply in yen & buy US assets. Trump, meanwhile, is threatening to shut down the US govt again and put 100% tariffs on Canada. Seat belts on.

Arising from Carney's speech, middle powers, including Australia, should issue coordinated statements of concern about rule-of-law breaches and the need to respect alliances. They should defend international institutions like WHO & the UN and accelerate strategic diversification away from the US.

Altamont for Capitalists What replaces globalisation, Davos Man, and neoliberalism? Serbian-American economist Branko Milanovic has an idea and it doesn't sound at all pleasant.

Davos used to be known as โ€˜Woodstock for capitalistsโ€™. But in this post-neoliberal era of might-is-right geopolitics, it looks more like its Altamont. My thoughts on an insightful analysis of the New World Disorderโ€ฆ

Gory sausage making at the Labor knackery โ€œSocial coherenceโ€ is being invoked everywhere, but public trust is fraying. Political panic, rushed laws and weak leadership are deepening division, not repairing it.

Itโ€™s less than a year since Albanese won an overwhelming election majority. It was a mandate to be a leader, not a wimp. So why does Albo find that lesson so hard to learn & on multiple fronts? Good question from former Canberra Times editor Jack Waterford.
