As Democracy Volunteers are the source of the claim of "Family Voting" in the Gorton & Denton by election, I got curious about their claims and thanks to @joenoonan.bsky.social I came across this claim about "Family Voting" during the 2020 Irish General Election.

A brief ๐Ÿงต

Yes, very much. Different record, equally broken.

Nominally serious media outlets produce so much nonsense about Danish politics. They are full of factual errors. โ€œDenmarkโ€ in the political discourse of other countries has become a phantasm to justify their rightwing policy demands. It has very little to do with empirical reality in the country.

A narrative still dominates around authoritarian workers who do not like immigration. With woke progressives who are our of touch with society. A radical right that is successful because progressives went to far. This narrative supported by many in and around politics has fueled Labourโ€˜s strategy.

I am glad that people realize that Labourโ€˜s electoral strategy is wrong but am surprised by the โ€œare they delusional? how do they keep doing that? what happened?โ€ We haven been arguing against this strategy for years. But resistance was huge among politicians, media, and many in academia.

Good that some Labour politicians draw the right conclusions. I am a broken record on this but Labour is repeating the same mistakes that other social democratic parties made in Europe. Some fragmentation is unavoidable but this is mostly the result of the strategic mistake to abandon progressives.

Insulting his constituents, Matt Goodwin does the most Matt Goodwin thing. Blaming others for failing to see his brilliance. Academics first, now voters. This sentiment is driving his radicalisation. Maybe even people at Reform will realise that itโ€˜s a very bad quality for a politician to have.

The UK wakes up to the reality of multi-party democracy. The reality of pretty much all other democracies in Europe. Letโ€˜s see if British politics and media realize that they could actually learn something from other countries that goes beyond shallow narratives like the โ€œDanish strategyโ€

Far-right authoritarian tactics to socially marginalize, intimidate, and disenfranchise a group. The oppression of one group signals to others you could be next. This goes far beyond bigotry. The authoritarian playbook enabled and empowered by anti-trans and anti-woke actors.

A couple of months ago, Clavicular was only known to a small dedicated share of people. Today, he is everywhere. It is possible to report on far-right subculture without platforming, sensationalizing voyeurism, and normalization. Yet, this is what our media environment creates over and over again.

For me one of the biggest lessons from German history: people participate in fascist and totalitarian oppression not (only) because of pressure but out of conviction and pleasure. As Bertolt Brecht said: โ€œEr hat Vorschlรคge gemacht. Wir haben sie angenommen.โ€œ

24.02.2026 07:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 150    ๐Ÿ” 62    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 4    ๐Ÿ“Œ 2

There is definitely variation in how much which issues matter for different RRPs. E.g. questions of regional independence for Vox. They also vary in how they have (successfully) politicized climate change. But nativism will always strongly matter esp. when kept salient by media and other parties.

Flutctuations in answers to MIP are huge. So this can definitely account for such a gap. There are also questions about how answers are coded. Categories are far from summing up to 100 and are quite vague.

We usually think that social identities precede preferences

We show the reverse is also true: people update their social identities to match their immigration preferences

Focus: class identity in ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง + Christian identity in ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

23.02.2026 10:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 126    ๐Ÿ” 56    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 6

Yes, but that is the case everywhere. So what we are capturing here is fluctuations in media attention. What we'd want for salience ideally is the effect of spatial distance on immigration on vote choice for a RRP. And I doubt that this is stronger in the UK than in other countries.

23.02.2026 09:53 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think this is more a sign of the problems with the "most important problem" question than a valid empirical finding about differences in radical right support. Radical right supporters are obsessed with immigration everywhere.

The Starmer/McSweeney strategy followed the illusion of needing to win back the nativist-authoritarian worker and in the process alienated those who form their actual electoral coalition. This has been the story of social democratic parties across Europe. This wonโ€™t be easily reversible.

Sorry for my ignorance, @casmudde.bsky.social @okwonga.bsky.social is Kompany the first black manager of a major European football team or where there others before him?

20.02.2026 17:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 4    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Some really important and impressive words from Kompany on racism in European football, it's history and a perspective on how powerless black players can be when they face racism. Also calling out Mourinho who is enabling and justifying racist abuse.

This should also make it clear that simplified spatial thinking is inadequate to understand current multi-party competition. See e.g. Labour worst and Greens strongest against Reform. Yet, spatial thinking (e.g. you have to moderate to win elections) still dominates political analysis and strategy.
