What a time this is for people who have even a vague understanding of how things play out historically.

Michael C. Rockefeller got shipwrecked in 1963, washed up on an island, and was promptly eaten by cannibals.

Telling a woman on the street shes gorgeous or wolf whistles arent sexual harassment. I Just wish we could go back to the early 1900s where women were actually women and didnt hate men.

Mary Shelly lost her virginity on her mom's grave, facilitated a lesbian wedding, and carried her dead husband’s heart around in a bag, so, yeah, I agree, let’s return to traditional values.

Anyway, shout out to @jenashleywright.bsky.social for writing "Glitz, Glam, and a Damn Good Time: How Mamie Fish, Queen of the Gilded Age, Partied Her Way to Power" and @ashlieatkinson.bsky.social for narrating. I flipped between reading (with eyes) and listening to the audiobook.

A 1.5 pages in and Mamie has invited a who's who of Newport to her home to meet a European Prince who turns out to be a monkey in a costume. Unhinged. I love her.

Before ‘Hamilton,’ the Schuyler Sisters Were Already Stars

I love doing book reviews for the @nytimes.com, and I especially love it when I get to review something as good as Amanda Vaill’s new biography on the Schuyler sisters. It's a pleasure from start to finish. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/22/b...

Soo I went into the bookstore to get a gift for someone & saw 2 📚 that caught my attention😊
They now are in my collection of “TBR”
Both look fascinating & I can’t wait to read them.
Two different experiences but so much the American experience.

If Republicans don't like people excitedly speculating regarding Trump's death, they can just ignore it, the way they do gun violence.

Dudes can rate women they date based on whether they are snooty bitches

It really does all come down to "men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them."

This app needs a Mamie Fish. We need someone who throws absolutely unhinged parties, cooks people on the time line, gives poor people money and also can't read and doesn't think women should vote (I'll ignore the last two things based on the strength of the first thee)

Screen shot of stephen colbert tweet reading

Stephen Colbert @StephenAtHome
#WeCameFirst by @JenAshleyWright drops today! A Good Book full of Bad Advice from Great Women, written by a Delightful Person

I'm married to a former Colbert writer, which means I got to meet him occasionally at holiday parties. This also meant I was the *most unimportant* person at those parties. He remembered my name, joked with me and asked how my writing was going every single time. He's just a really, really nice man.

Meme of a group of twenty-something women partying next to an image of a forty something woman drinking wine sadly in front of her laptop. Text reads

No kids, no man, no problem.
Just vibes and vacations!

REALITY AT

Why are all the good men taken? I guess men Just can't handle strong women...

Whenever I see men post this I think about how when women are lonely, it's not pitied. It's used to chastise them for not being nicer to men. Meanwhile, when men are experiencing a "loneliness epidemic" they decide the answer is *also* that women should be nicer to men.

That's the way it's been for most of history. And, as someone who still thinks that democracy is, at least, a nice idea, it's fairly horrifying to me.

I have a few (very wealthy) friends who have argued that if you have a new generation of people who can't think critically, read deeply and are cheerfully distracted by slop, well, that's their choice. They can just do servile work for their betters.

He can't argue for the choices he's making, because he does not have those skills BECAUSE of the choice he's made.

What Happens After A.I. Destroys College Writing? The demise of the English paper will end a long intellectual tradition, but it’s also an opportunity to reëxamine the purpose of higher education.

Today, commoners are embracing a tool that makes them less likely to be able to make a convincing argument about anything without assistance. One of the most striking parts of this article to me was how dumb and dull the man who uses ChatGPT is in conversation. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

One of the reasons monarchs were so horrified by the invention of the printing press was that it might enable charismatic commoners who knew how to write to share their ideas widely. A lot of those ideas had to do with overthrowing the monarchy.

It really comes back to Atwood's claim that "a word after a word after a word is power." If you cede that power willingly, you will have one less essential weapon against demagoguery.

I suppose my greatest objection to using Chat GPT instead of writing yourself is that you cannot convince anyone to do anything unless you know how to use words well. 🧵
