Doctor says β€˜we must do better’ as poll shows most women don't know how menopause can impact mental health A poll found that many more people associate menopause with hot flushes than with conditions like anxiety and depression, even though they are common

Each of us can experience changes in our mental health during stages on our lives when our hormone levels change. Many women don't realize some of the specific issues that can arise during perimenopause and menopause.

International Women’s Day did not begin as a celebration. It began as unrest. Women striking in factories, suffragists beaten in the streets, workers demanding dignity and the vote. History keeps trying to polish it into something more comfortable. Its origins were anything but.

'Brain scars': The hidden forms of sexism that harm women's health Subtle sexism that pervades everyday life often gets shrugged off. But research shows it can still have lasting psychological effects – including "thinning" parts of the brain.

What kind of negative effects do women have when they experience sexism? These can vary based on the frequency of negative experiences but depression and anxiety are some of the most common effects.

About International Women’s Day
The beginnings of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early twentieth century. It emerged from the activities of labour movements in North America and Europe and reflected a growing call for women’s equal participation in society.

International Women's Day first took place on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, when over a million people attended rallies to show their support for women's rights to work, vote, hold public office and live free of discrimination. Other countries began to observe and celebrate this day in the years that followed. The United Nations recognized 1975 as International Women's Year and began celebrating March 8 asβ€―International Women's Day.

Today, International Women's Day is a day of unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action and is marked in many countries worldwide, including Canada.

It's International #Women's Day! While there's been a lot of effort to combat gender discrimination, there's still more that we can do. Maybe today is the day to take time and plan some small steps each of us can do, to reduce discrimination. www.canada.ca/en/women-gen...

Iceland found that dancing, music, painting, or sports trigger biochemical reactions in the brain similar to mood altering substances but without the harmful effects. By offering youth free programs for such activities, the rate of substance use plummeted within 20 years. #teens

We're incredibly sad that we've had to report on numerous similar cases of suicide that had been encouraged by a chatbot. When people look for help, or even just a friendly companion, this shouldn't be what they end up with. 😒

Yes: this is what it can feel like: "not watching feels irresponsible and privileged, while watching feels destabilizing. To disengage can feel like moral failure. Yet staying engaged can feel like emotional depletion." It can be brutal, and we need to pace ourselves.

We're proud of efforts by people such as Ian's to help out families in Minnesota. This is what we mean when we say that efforts don't necessarily have to cost *you* financially. You CAN be an organizer and simply develop the plan of who you're going to help, in whatever way and get things rolling.

Really excellent article from Matthew Green that everyone should read. With so many age verification laws coming into effect, there needs to be some sort of verification system that doesn't blatantly wreck the user's privacy.

It's well known that these states are rather hostile to LGBTQIA+ persons, with laws put in to make life even more difficult for them. That hatred of trans in these states, combines with racism to make things even worse, particularly for black trans women. 😒

Many alleged suicides of Black trans women are in fact modern-day lynchings, report finds Jill Collen Jefferson, the founder of JULIAN, explains what happens when a transgender woman’s death is ruled a suicide and a community calls it something else.

This is NOT surprising to us at all given the states investigated for this report. Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama have all had pretty horrible support and laws to help transgender people. What they HAVE had a lot of is hatred and intolerance. πŸ‘‡πŸ§΅

Hatred against women has been on the rise again the past few years. With that inevitably comes violence against them, typically from partners. Shelter spaces to accommodate them is usually lacking, with many people turned away due to lack of space. 😒

Stand With Minnesota Stand With Minnesota is a hub for supporting, learning, and taking action to support Minnesotans impacted by ICE and federal enforcement.

Our little standwithminnesota.com team staved off multiple evictions today. I’m so proud of us. And the stories are so heartbreaking, and there’s still so much need.

If you can help, I’ll get it directly where it needs to go.

The day that we'd hoped would never come, ended up being what we woke up to today. Already US/Israel have apparently hit 2 schools, killing approx 50+ young girls, wounding dozens more people. Neighboring countries will recognize that they're likely next on the menu. This will be very bad. 😒

When someone tells me their family member has "tried everything" b/c they've been to rehab multiple times, I ask if they were evaluated for a co-occurring mental health disorder. Failure to treat such conditions is a common reason for substance use recovery struggles. #addiction #recoveryposse

Take whatever steps you need to in order to reduce the risk of burnout. Activism is not a 50 yard dash, it's a marathon and you need to pace yourself. It's OK to take a time out and look after yourself, there's plenty of others of us, to step in and pick it up for a bit while you do that. πŸ«‚
