Is there room for privacy in this new world? Have we learned from the mistakes of the past?

This week's @monopolyreport.bsky.social podcast.
www.monopolyreportpod.com/episode-51-w...
@patrickmcgee.bsky.social shares a bit about his process for writing "Apple in China". There's a lesson for us regulatory folks as we try to share BIG ideas in a way that is digestible.
There's also lots of stuff about his fascinating book & Apple's stance on privacy and competition.
By 2027, browsers will be required to support GPC signals. Why only browsers - and not Mobile O/S or CTV platforms? .
It's complicated....

By 2027 browsers will be required to support GPC signals.
Google probably won't make the GPC toggle quite so prominent (as it is in my pic)... and there are lots of things taking place in the background to consider. See my substack

Btw, this is our 50th episode of the Monopoly Report podcast. Pretty cool, eh?

On this week's @monopolyreport.bsky.social pod, we continue my discussion with former Chair of the FTC, Jon Leibowitz.
In this clip, we talk about where to set the bar in terms of privacy rules - where we make the point that having FEW rules or TOO STRINGENT rules tends to favor big tech.
Antitrust law is increasingly less likely to save publishers. And all due respect to wikiHow, Google's not going to save them either....
So what will help? Collective Action and Technical Solutions.
Cloudflare's scarecrow may be part of the solution.

I asked former FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz about how the Commission viewed Google's acquisition of DoubleClick back in 2008 - what he shared was eye opening to say the least!

If you want to better understand WHY digital media is in this state, take a look at the period from 2004 to 2013 --- from Google's IPO to its acquisitions of DLCK, Admeld & Invite to the intitial antitrust investigation by the FTC that didn't bear fruit.

We interrupt today's (great) coverage of the Google trial with some developments in Europe - as the EU Commission looks to revisit certain consent requirements for digital media.
We need to go further & re-think other vestiges of last era (e.g., icons on ads).

More thoughts on Google's recent proposed court settlement that brings the RTB Control.... all in the name of privacy.
Why deceptively simple privacy tools are in fact, well... deceptive.

17.09.2025 11:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0How do we fix digital media in the EU? In my view, the answer to that question should include experimentation. I was honored to have a thoughtful discussion with @tobiasjudin.bsky.social of Norway's data protection regulator (the Datatilsynet). Norway is considering a ban on behavioral ads.

I wrote some stuff about Judge Mehta's decision re: Google for @monopolyreport.bsky.social . Time to admit that any post Kahn/Kanter momentum re: antitrust has dissipated. Lot's more - also, I'll be talking about the decision w/Ari Paparo on the @marketecture.tv pod this week. tinyurl.com/37xek9hs

Why I'm predicting that the U.S. Congress will pass a privacy law this September. (building off a great NY Times piece that - all due respect - buries the lede).

Portlandia does a great job of satirizing a particular (at times, annoying) part of U.S. culture.
Mapping purposes to what end?
You are anything but lazy, my friend (:
I guess we need to define "worse" here. If more than one non-bundled consent is required, I'm not sure it really matters.
Tho the idea of implementing 12 separate consents would have made a great sketch for the EU version of Portlandia. (:
So we need a dozen separate consents?

As of today, MOST of the talk about the next era - AI audience creation - is just that.... talk.
I'd love it if someone could change my mind.
