Because there are many ways to reach understanding—and every one of them counts

So despite being good at maths, I never felt why base ten was “natural.” Because for me, it wasn’t.
It’s such a perfect example of how “common sense” in learning often rests on physical experience—and how that experience isn’t universal.

Today, while reading a computer science book, I found the answer:
👉 We use base ten because humans have ten fingers.
It seems obvious now. But here’s the twist: I’ve never counted on my fingers. Ever.
As someone with a physical disability, finger-counting just wasn’t how I learned numbers.

I’ve always wondered: why do we use base ten in maths? Wouldn’t a base like eight be more efficient? It has more factors, after all! Today, while reading a computer science book, I found the answer:
👉 We use base ten because humans have ten fingers.

A small revelation this morning made me laugh—and got me thinking deeply about how we learn maths.

Today, I was finishing up preparing the session on AI research tools for my new course, explaining how to best use AI at work. I posed an example question to several AI tools

Honoured to attend the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant at Woolwich Barracks with the Worshipful Company of Educators. The event included a powerful talk from an officer at the Army Education Centre, highlighting the great range of educational opportunities open to soldiers in every rank.

The point that stays with me from our meeting was the number of forward-looking community initiatives that her office was backing and supporting in this vibrant city whilst preserving the lessons from the past. I'm looking forward to seeing how the city evolves and grows for many years.

Another very memorable moment from my recent trip to Derry with the Worshipful Company of Educators was the opportunity to meet its mayor within the beautiful and historic Guildhall.

It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when you combine world-class science with a commitment to education and global access.

Now, there’s more good news: BL4S of CERN has just won the 2025 European Physical Society Outreach Prize.
Since 2014, BL4S has allowed students from over 100 countries to propose and perform experiments at CERN and DESY.

Earlier this year, I posted about Beamline for Schools (BL4S) the international competition that gives high school students the chance to run real particle physics experiments at some of the world’s top labs.
