fascinating thread about how big satellites are laid to rest

I love a chronological timeline... except when I am hoping to get a post seen by more than the people who are online the exact moment I post it???

Putting this out there for the #STS and #astronomy folks:
If anyone knows great readings on space telescope and Mars rover images, how they're constructed and how we make meaning of them, I would love to add those to my research! (I already have Seeing Like a Rover and Picturing the Cosmos)

Both of the options here are human writers. The first option is unprocessed human writing and the second option is human writing run through a language model to reproduce the same outputs with different words

If it couldn't have existed without training data, it isn't creating anything at all.

From an ignorant outsider perspective, NASA making the cuts before the budget passed (which it never did) felt so insane to me

It fascinates me that humans want this connection so much. It's SETI on planet Earth.
And that there's an openness to consciousness in machines, but less so* to identifying it in most sentient, intelligent, socially complex non-human animals.

*I'm talking public, not researchers in either case

Hey this isn’t a dunk at all, if you’re a writer this is the energy I genuinely need you to bring to your own work. You have to believe in yourself at least as hard you expect anyone else to.

The trite reply to this is β€œquite well, thank you” or β€œIt’s when a human being is conscious”. I actually think a wilfully ignorant answer guards us from grifts; we have little idea how it works, so little chance of correctly identifying it in non-humans, including that pet rock you just put a hat on

Don’t let mega-constellation-building billionaires steal your night sky Satellites are wonders of modern technology that have improved all of our lives. But having more than a million of them in orbit could destroy our view of the heavens and seriously damage our planet

Elon Musk has already started plans to launch a million satellites.

Yes. A MILLION.

This is a colossally bad idea, and it's not too late to make your voice heard. I explain everything:
