This amazing interceptor with it's blazing speed (Mach 2.27) and rocket-like climb (50,000 ft/min) is seen here in the bright sunshine at the Midland Air Museum, Coventry, England. It is in standard RAF camouflage colours of the 1980's, namely dark green and ocean grey with silver undersides. On its tailfin, it carries the badge of No 5 (Army Co-operation) Sqn, with a Canadian Maple leaf at the centre, commemorating the Squadron's close association with the Canadian Corps on the Western Front, during WW1. https://shortfinals.org/2012/01/10/the-last-of-the-true-interceptors-the-bac-lightning-f-6-xr771/

BAC Lightning F.6, Midland Air Museum, Coventry. A fast-climbing (50,000 ft/min) interceptor, developed from the English Electric P.1B research aircraft (1st flight Apr. 1964), this aircraft served with Nos 5 & 11 Sqns, RAF. It was armed with 4 x 30mm cannons and IR air-to-air missiles (see Alt) 🛩️⚔️📍

The preservation of aircraft is a huge task! When you consider that in active service an aircraft such as this Avro Vulcan would have had a very large number of specialists keeping it ready to fly, and the deep resources of a whole air force infrastructure and a Government to back it up, it is no wonder that the task of just keeping it CLEAN is a Herculean one for a volunteer-ran museum, as only the very largest national museums (RAF Museum Midlands and the Imperial War Museum, Duxford) have the space and resources to house a Vulcan inside. This particular Vulcan is at NELSAM, the North East Land Sea and Air Museum, a Member of Aviation Heritage UK, and an organisation I admire! The scaffolding you can see around the nose area is there to support the final stages of a repainting job. By the way, an old friend of mine Wing Commander (Ret'd) Bill Ramsey, RAF flew this very aircraft when it was in service. n.b. The Avro Vulcan was operated ONLY by the RAF, although we NEARLY sold some to the Australians!

Avro Vulcan B.2, XL319, ex-44 Sqn, RAF. This classic delta-winged bomber was a mainstay of Britain's nuclear deterrent. It was able to carry 21,000lb of conventional bombs or a stand-off Blue Steel weapon or a WE177 thermonuclear bomb. The NELSAM museum in Sunderland later bought it for £5000 🛩️⚔️📍

SO, lately I’ve been thinking about aircraft ‘identity’ in respect of vintage aircraft restoration. Since there is no official definition of ‘restoration’ (from the CAA or otherwise), one could stick a data plate on a brick and call it a Battle of Britain Spitfire. The so called provenance of 1/n
