A very thick book titled LA PÉRÉGRINATION VERS L'OUEST which has a monkey in a robe sitting under a tree on the cover A black and white woodcut illustration from LA PÉRÉGRINATION VERS L'OUEST. A monkey and a samurai fight a monster.

Monkeys! Fighting! Magic! Monks! Pigs! My french publishers gave me a copy of their amazing new book. 800 pages of adventure with hundreds of woodcut illustrations by disciples of Hokusai. Have a look inside here:

After two months watching state TV news again for 2 days, honestly stunned by this level of quality from a journalistic perspective. This being the prime news carrier of the nation makes it a relevant situation. I expect the shock may wear off over time like slow boiling water for lobsters.

I take exception to the inaccuracy of this.

Reading international news feels like a field trip into an asylum for the criminally insane.

Begging the question who really is insane.

Are the "criminally insane" simply smart savants attuned to reliable, raw reality, while I am a deeply delusional dreamer?

Interesting opinion piece about the European farmer protests on Al Jazeera, linking them more to ecology vs profitability in the global market, as opposed to the classic European coverage.

Gumshoe has its plusses and minusses. Minus is that damage rules are a bit of an afterthought. Plus is the smart skill system geared specifically towards investigation.
In other words, if you never play mystery or whodunnit, you don't need to tackle your gumshoephobia.

China is the number one producer of both “green” renewable energy and “black” polluting coal. So although China installed more solar panels in 2023 than the United States has in the past five decades, it is also currently building six times as many new coal plants as the rest of the world combined.

The third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, India, is celebrating its own superior economic growth driven by a national energy program whose centerpiece is coal. This fossil fuel accounts for three-quarters of India’s primary energy production.

The image: Two scientists look on as a robot messily paints a canvas. The robot says “My practice both radically questions and steadfastly reaffirms the viewer's inherent non-spatial hierarchies by expansively recontextualising liminal narratives.”

The caption: “ArtBot 2.0 still can't make good art, but its facility for bewildering explanations has improved exponentially.”

A recent cartoon for New Scientist.

Steampunk has punk in the sense of fighting the despot. But not for the price of having no steam, only punk.

Because the colonisers have the steam and the colonised haven't.
Nobody wants to play the dude with the stick who stands there and watches NPCs pilot airships across the sky.

It goes to railroad when you tell them that they must fight the monsters and can't attempt anything else like talk, bribery, deception or Charm spells.
Up until then it is just awful design.

Gotta say, next to Ramsey Bolton from Song of Ice and Fire even Genghis Khan and Stalin look like nice enough fellas.

Same here.
I grew up with Heinzelmännchen; the Brownies seem to bridge the gap between them and this "child", due to being tied to a house.

They are all pretty closely related, except the part about the knives and swords.
Might that be a callback to old myths of human sacrifice?
A mystery.

Working online as a German speaker I am used to tools telling me there are so many errors in my text that *they* give up... after a certain point all the squiggles collectively sigh and just go away.

Hmmm.... das wird bestimmt auch kulturell unterschiedlich sein. Ich kann mir persönlich vorstellen, dass Ö eher zu locked-in neigt, England zu stepping-stone. Das allerdings Bauchgefühl.

I struggle with ACKS 2 ... it is so clearly based on BECMI, but everything is also different. What with AC 0 being the equivalent of 1e AC 10 or Basic AC 9, and with long and convoluted proficiency rules.
