Climate Repair: Hope or Hype?
📅 Wednesday 18 March, 7pm
📍 Babbage Lecture Theatre, Cambridge

Hear more at our Cambridge Festival panel debate next week, chaired by Tom Heap (BBC Radio 4, Countryfile). Oliver Morton (The Economist), Amanda Burson (British Antarctic Survey), Clara Botto (University of Cambridge), and Jack Stilgoe (UCL) will be on the panel.
From reflecting sunlight to making more ice, climate repair technologies are capturing imaginations and stirring debate. Are they the breakthrough we need, or a dangerous distraction from cutting emissions?
Climate repair: genuine hope, or just hype?
We asked attendees at our recent seminars what they think, and opinions are divided 👇

If it's good enough for Rome, it's good enough for Cambridge! We're continuing this discussion at Cambridge Festival, with speakers from both sides. Register for free to join "Climate Repair: Hope or Hype?" on Wednesday 18th March at 7pm: www.tickettailor.com/events/centr...
"I am so grateful to Arctic Circle for hosting this plenary event," he said. "Good discussions on difficult topics are so important, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir's chairing was masterful. It was fantastic to listen and learn from Dalee Sambo Dorough (University of Alaska) and Mark Symes (ARIA)."
Geoengineering: catalyst or threat?
That's the question asked at the Arctic Circle Rome Forum - Polar Dialogue this week. Our director, Shaun Fitzgerald, joined an expert panel to discuss the potential benefits and risks of geoengineering in addressing climate change.
Our Climate Lunchtime Seminars launched last week with a full house 🍕🌍 sharing great conversations and pizza.
This week we’re celebrating Women in Science! Huge thanks to Prof. Sasha Turchyn, Cerys Walsh, and Shreya Patel joining us on 12 Feb at 1PM to explore: What can science do for the climate?
📣 New paper: Conversations around climate engineering are often polarised. The authors take insights from the history of controversial medical research to consider how conversations and governance could move forward in climate engineering.

🤝 For health and climate
The CLEAR-Methane project created a design for filters that, when installed in ventilation systems, could help both our health and our planet.
This week, they've published a paper highlighting its feasibility: www.climaterepair.cam.ac.uk/news/health-...

Read the Letters from @hughhunt.bsky.social, Bryony Worthington, Portia Adade Williams and Angela Churie Kallhauge, as well as the Editorial: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Our own Prof Hugh Hunt emphasised one thing the article got right: solar geoengineering is not to be promoted as a "solution to global heating... All these ideas are the subject of serious research, in universities around the world, that takes ethical and governance considerations seriously."
Last week, @theguardian.com published an Editorial on geoengineering. Tagline: "Sun-dimming risks putting the planet’s thermostat under Donald Trump’s control. Better to adopt the precautionary principle with high-stakes science."
Today, three Letters push back against the claims of the article.
