Student hostages in culture war | EMBO reports EMBO Press is an editorially independent publishing platform for the development of EMBO scientific publications.

@lynnkamerlin.bsky.social & I argue @emboreports.org: students/postdocs must not be victims of immigration clampdowns. This is ethically indefensible & will undermine the knowledge-based economies of countries following this path. www.embopress.org/doi/full/10.... www.embopress.org/doi/full/10....

As a Jew, I am SO ANGRY that the feds are pretending they care about me, as a pretense to extort universities.

Not insane. Just knows that if everyone says this over and over, voters will remember it and think defunding the NIH is fine. These Sunday shows are just giant propaganda fests enabled by networks.

My quote of the day

There is no 'slippery slope' toward loss of liberties, only a long staircase where each step downward must first be tolerated by the American people and their leaders.

The "arsenic life" paper finally got retracted by Science after 15 years. RIP As-DNA. #microsky

Story time! When this paper came out in 2010, I was neck-deep trying to grow SAR11 on defined medium. Everyone thought there was some magic "missing" ingredient. Maybe nucleotide monophosphates? 1/6

I.R.S. Says Churches Can Endorse Candidates From the Pulpit
In a court filing, the tax agency said a decades-old ban on campaigning by tax-exempt groups should not apply to houses of worship speaking to their own members.

The double standard here is stunning. Universities are losing grants, student aid, and endowments for being "too woke." But churches (which also receive federal funds, eg, for school vouchers, food banks, and marriage promotion programs) are now allowed to openly endorse political candidates.

Every evening I take the "You'll make it to tomorrow" sign off my bedroom wall, and put it in my time machine.

Every morning, I get into my time machine, go to yesterday before I woke, and hang the sign up.

It's nice to have something to be certain of, these days.

The Big, Beautiful Bill assigns each American a billionaire who will live the
American dream for you. You can check in on your billionaire at intervals and see how he is using your money. Maybe he's building a 19th pool. Maybe he's buying himself some formerly public land! Maybe he's taking a Supreme Court justice on a dream vacation! Maybe he is reupholstering the Statue of Liberty to hide the poem.

A heatmap reveals the most common 4 digit PIN numbers, visualised from the data leaked from several large data breaches. The horizontal axis plots the frequency of the first two digits, the vertical axis the second two digits. Clear (and somewhat predictable) patterns emerge from the dataset. A diagonal line of β€˜heat’ from bottom left to top right reveals people choosing double digits (2323, 6868 etc). A strong horizontal line at the 19 point shows people using their birth year as a PIN code (1971, 1998 etc). And a large amount of heat in the bottom left shows how people commonly use their birthdate in a MM/DD or DD/MM format. The most common code in the set is 1234.

This is remarkable. New Quinnipiac poll finds support for path to legalization for most undocumented immigrants has risen to 64%. Only 31% want most of them deported.

That's a 14 point net swing for legalization since Trump took office.

On immigration generally, he's at 41-57!

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future.

But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

Today RFK Jr took the single biggest step towards destroying childhood vaccines

When @nytimes asked me in December whether RFK could kill the vaccine program - I said he’d have to remove CDCs ACIP

And… that’s exactly what he just did today

Not good-just like that we cannot trust CDC on vaccines
