I've seen both, from palms in the smog in LA in '71 to heat so intense visual scenes appear to come in waves. Your work seems like the later, to me.

Now I think not only the Arctic is experiencing "bioclimatic extremes". Mika, could these studies be applied to the sub-tropics or the the whole planet? Could the Arctic be the early warning system of ecologically disturbing extremes planet-wide?

Looking at weird waves of extreme-to-record heat and cold circulating Earth this winter of 25/26, I was wondering if we are seeing something new. How would we know with only the past as guide in a system so variable as weather?

Yes, Guy Debord (correct spellling) nailed it. We are in the Spectacle now (required reading & free on Net with a search). Also: "We're All Bozos On This Bus" Firesign Theatre 1971 (album) brings to life the Carnival we now inhabit. All seen when the seeds were sown.

We only see reality imperfectly. We create stories, again imperfectly, to fill in the gaps. Good science reveals aspects of reality. Bacon helped develop the scientific method in part to escape superstition in late Middle Age.

Intensification of extreme cold events in East Asia in response to global mean sea-level rise - Nature Communications This study uses climate model experiments and shows that global mean sea-level rise can reshape atmospheric circulation and intensify winter cold extremes in East Asia, threatening not only coastal bu...

Some of the concerns you raise come up in this new paper "Intensification of extreme cold events in East Asia in response to global mean sea-level rise". The authors assume equal global rise.

Then there is the problem of other multiple changes and influences expected in the same time period. Changes in glacier mass, albedo - many things could impact the flow of air, blocking patterns and winds as well. It is harder to trust a forecast based on a single driver like this.

I have concerns about this paper. The authors assume equal sea level rise around the world, but that is far from the case. The mechanics of HOW relatively small increases of ocean surface area lead to large scale wind and blocking changes is not described in the paper (unless I missed it). ...
