Just as a reminder: despite some recent issues with political appointees, the CDC is an overwhelming force for good in the world. You can't ever know how many lives you've saved by preventing disease outbreaks, but I suspect for CDC it's in the billions. CDC workers are heroes.

Per CNN, the motive behind today's shooting at Emory/CDC may have been a belief that the COVID-19 vaccine caused the shooter's illness. The false belief that vaccines are unsafe has been amplified by RFK and other current leaders at HHS.

I suspect this rhetoric played a role in this shooting.

It's appalling that someone would be detained for seeking medical care, but especially so when giving such a selfless gift to future generations.

Shame on the NIH for reporting this person. Shame on ICE for detaining them. Shame on Trump for making this so integral to his presidency.

Grants are awarded preferentially to a chosen few, who are also inappropriately spending federal funds to hire lawyers and technical experts to help them get grants (I have never heard of anyone retaining legal counsel to submit a grant application).

Peer review of grant applications is biased and not rigorous (it’s very competitive and fairness and objectivity are upheld by dedicated NIH staff).

The scientific “reproducibility crisis” is the same thing as data falsification (it isn’t and the “crisis” is mostly made up).

Fraud and misconduct are rampant (they aren’t). COVID was a lab leak that started in Wuhan funded in part with NIH grant money (the evidence suggests otherwise).

*The* main purpose of the EO is to move funding priorities and decisions away from experts and career professionals over to political appointees. With the ultimate power held by Vought / OMB.

Oh, and it's not just grants going forward - this will apply to all existing grants as well.

As I said in the beginning, the purpose is clear - shift funding decisions away from experts towards the President's appointees, giving Vought veto.

Suffice to say, the power to enact such policies lies with congress and not the president.

But, of course, that matters little.

The Trump/Vought EO on politicizing science is very, very bad.

But it smells of weakness. Something is happening here. Vought is not as strong as he was. Let's see what happens in the next two months.
