Just as a reminder: despite some recent issues with political appointees, the CDC is an overwhelming force for good in the world. You can't ever know how many lives you've saved by preventing disease outbreaks, but I suspect for CDC it's in the billions. CDC workers are heroes.

I think a lot of Americans believe their country is the one they learned about in school. They havenโt grasped the fact that itโs well on the way to becoming a Christofascist dictatorship.
09.08.2025 00:16 โ ๐ 886 ๐ 383 ๐ฌ 78 ๐ 36And I have no idea where we go from here. Thereโs such a profound difference between e.g. how we understand that this is the intended outcome when it happens to abortion providers, versus how public health is unequipped to consider the possibility weโre making nice with people who want this
09.08.2025 00:38 โ ๐ 152 ๐ 17 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0The CDC thing has me really fucked up. I canโt tell you how much stochastic terrorism driven by Covid disinformation has been a concern in every workplace Iโve been in since 2020. 09.08.2025 00:35 โ ๐ 1648 ๐ 277 ๐ฌ 21 ๐ 14Per CNN, the motive behind today's shooting at Emory/CDC may have been a belief that the COVID-19 vaccine caused the shooter's illness. The false belief that vaccines are unsafe has been amplified by RFK and other current leaders at HHS.
I suspect this rhetoric played a role in this shooting.
It's appalling that someone would be detained for seeking medical care, but especially so when giving such a selfless gift to future generations.
Shame on the NIH for reporting this person. Shame on ICE for detaining them. Shame on Trump for making this so integral to his presidency.
People who come to the NIH clinical center do so to obtain life saving care and to literally give parts of themselves to medical research so that future people with their illness can be cured.
Patients come from all over the world and their participation in turn helps people all over the world.
Grant recipients are corrupt, conflicted, and are getting rich doing nothing except spending their grant money advancing the woke agenda (lol).
08.08.2025 15:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Grants are awarded preferentially to a chosen few, who are also inappropriately spending federal funds to hire lawyers and technical experts to help them get grants (I have never heard of anyone retaining legal counsel to submit a grant application).
08.08.2025 15:43 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Peer review of grant applications is biased and not rigorous (itโs very competitive and fairness and objectivity are upheld by dedicated NIH staff).
08.08.2025 15:43 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The scientific โreproducibility crisisโ is the same thing as data falsification (it isnโt and the โcrisisโ is mostly made up).
Fraud and misconduct are rampant (they arenโt). COVID was a lab leak that started in Wuhan funded in part with NIH grant money (the evidence suggests otherwise).
...the usual laundry list of offenses that federally-funded science has committed against the God-Emperor of America...
...The government shouldnโt fund grants containing forbidden language about anyone who isnโt a white conservative Christian man (yes, it should).
some of the most vicious, depraved, and illegal bullshit to be issued in the Trump administrationโs War on Science, but also a very stupid self-own for America. If enacted, it will devastate science, health, and the economy.
08.08.2025 15:40 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1A little less TL;DR, a few things to note in particular.
1๏ธโฃ "senior appointees" will be appointed by the President and will have full authority over funding priorities. In coordination with OMB (giving Vought outsized power).
Just to give the TL;DR on this one:
*The* main purpose of the EO is to move funding priorities and decisions away from experts and career professionals over to political appointees. With the ultimate power held by Vought / OMB.
Oh, and it's not just grants going forward - this will apply to all existing grants as well.
08.08.2025 00:21 โ ๐ 48 ๐ 8 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1As I said in the beginning, the purpose is clear - shift funding decisions away from experts towards the President's appointees, giving Vought veto.
Suffice to say, the power to enact such policies lies with congress and not the president.
But, of course, that matters little.
This is literally some of the craziest shit I have ever read.
And that's saying a lot.

Going to make a prediction here:
The Trump/Vought EO on politicizing science is very, very bad.
But it smells of weakness. Something is happening here. Vought is not as strong as he was. Let's see what happens in the next two months.
Wannabe deputy dictator Vought took a serious metaphorical beating last Wednesday. A political one. He wants to project strength again. He overplayed his hand, and lost the last round, and will lose this round too.
