The Dewey Decimal System used to only have two classifications for Black people: 325 (colonization) & 326 (slavery). Each book by a Black person was put into one of these classifications. A book of poetry? Classified as colonization.

Hello, my name is [Name], and I’m a concerned [patient/parent/trans person/ally/New Yorker].

I’m calling about NYU Langone’s reported cancellation of gender-affirming care appointments for trans patients under 19.

This preemptive policy change, in response to an Executive Order that is not settled law, is harmful and cruel.

The American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, consider this essential care.

Gender-affirming care is proven to be life-saving. A 2022 peer-reviewed study published by the AMA found that it reduces depression by 60% and suicidality by 73% among trans youth.

Canceling these appointments puts the mental and physical health of trans youth at serious risk.

I think the transgender kids are the bravest kids right now that we see; they're as brave as my generation was in breaking down segregation. They're breaking down-I don't have the word for it right now-but it's gender prejudice, and [the idea that] somebody has decided that they can tell you who you are, what your name should be, and how you should look.

And those youngsters are saying, "No, I can decide who I am, what my name should be." Everybody's mad at me like, You should be a girl because we've decided you're a girl. And they say, "Well, who the hell are you?" I can decide that I'm a boy. And if it makes me happy, what does it mean to you? And I can decide that my name is John. And if you don't like that my name is Geraldine, why can't you name yourself? And if the people who know you and love you-or have to talk to you, maybe they don't even love you but they have to talk to you -you can tell them, β€œThis is my name, and I would like to be referred to in that way."

Nikki Giovanni sitting on the floor in a white suit, blue/periwinkle shirt, and white and black wingtips with hands together as if caught mid clap. She is smiling, eyes twinkling. Full wide open mouth laugh with all of her top teeth showing and a little of the bottom. Her hair is fully white in a twa, little to no jewelry with either a pin or mic on her lapel.

Nikki Giovanni was a bridge elder. One of those elders who held onto their youthful exuberance. So much that you could see the young person they once were in their eyes. She bridged the gap between young and old, standing up for the youth, because she never forgot what it was like to be young.

This country wants poor people to die. They want them to suffer from treatable conditions. They are gleeful about it. And that’s why no one cares about an insurance CEO. This is their bed and they get to lie on it.

Apropos of nothing, thru my spouseβ€˜s job we have β€œ good” insurance. 5yrs ago, I had knee replacement &they made me jump thru 1 million hoops ofc (& we were out of pocket $$$$ too). 1 month later, they sent me a 5-figure bill for the full amount. They *retroactively* unapproved it & demanded I pay up

I see a lot of people talk about the environmental costs of AI. I don't see as much about the human exploitation behind it.

Friday Poem - How I Abandoned My Body To His Keeping - Seren This week's poem is from Kim Moore's debut collection, The Art of Falling, released earlier this year.

@kimmoorepoet.bsky.social has written so many wonderful poems. But this was the one, still in her 1st pamphlet, that made me love & follow her work from the beginning!

A staggering statistic: Every $100 increase in median rent is associated with a *9 percent* increase in the estimated homelessness rate, according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The math of our housing crisis is brutally clear.
