Struck this morning by how the win wasn’t from the UC system itself pushing backβ€”it was its worker power through *unions* and aligned groups like @aaup.org defending UC interests, even though admin itself wasn’t.
There’s some kind of lesson here

65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

The Shocking Truth About Gen Z Voters Is That They’re Pretty Great Stop panicking: They are the most progressive generation ever, especially on race. If that surprises you, you’ve been listening to the wrong story.

β€œGen Z has the lowest racial resentment of any generation ever studied.”

Important work from @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social that offers a clear explanation of why there is an intense push to change school curricula to make them more white supremacist

Young brain researchers ponder other careers amid federal funding cuts Cuts and disruptions to federal research funding are causing many young brain scientists to reconsider their career choice.

On NPR's nationally syndicated radio program "All Things Considered," three SfN members speak about the funding and career challenges facing the neuroscience community.

Nothing scares this administration more. Their power lies in our silence.

Yes yes yes.

So many low-income and working class people I've interviewed talked about how disconnected politics feels from their lives. That's both because so many who do politics are socially distant from regular people, and about the way politics is too often done - one-way, transactional.

Brand new data:

Republicans blamed for the shutdown (+12) and for health care premiums going up (+28!!).

These are stunning numbers. Republicans aren't immune from the pressure this creates.

Time to press our advantage. Stand for what we believe in.

guy said, β€œDo you like Marx?”

I said, β€œI haven’t met him.”

Guy said, β€œNo, no, he’s dead.”

β€œWow, what happened?”

β€œNo, no, he died long ago.”

I thought the guy Marx had just died. So then, β€œWhy are you asking me if he died long ago?”

β€œNo, he wrote a lot. He wrote that poor people should not be poor.”

I said, β€œSounds amazing.”

I’m giving you a sense of how naΓ―ve I was. After they left, I went to the library to look for Marx. So that was my introduction to Karl Marx.

BS: The FBI.

MM: The FBI. Then, of course, I took a class on Marx. Couldn’t just get Marx out of the library. But,

Generally, when a party is trying to appeal to a new cohort of voters, they don’t send masked men to publicly kidnap and disappear thousands of members of that cohort.

And now the paper has finally been accepted, I just wanna say to all the editors: PLEASE stop sending papers back out to reviewers after 1 (at most 2) round! It’s a burden on the system when a decision could be made without reviewers’ approvals. It’s not the reviewers’ job to have a final say!

Such a common slur against the poor. I’ve heard it often in my reporting: β€œBut look, they have big flat screen TVs!” But as a hospital social worker said, β€œIf you are never taking a vacation, can’t go to a movie, can’t eat out, this is your only pleasure.β€œ (Also TVs are often rented.)

And we have now progressed from data analysis to policy recommendations.

I told her that we'd calculate the cash value of her candy haul, that I'd ask her to raid her piggy bank and donate 1/3 the candy cash value to a local food bank, and that I'd add on a 5X match.
