It’s in the album’s final moments where Lust For Life shines a little bit. The two guitars on “Tomorrow Never Comes” compliment each other really nicely, and Sean Ono Lennon sounds cute trading off with Lana’s soft delivery. You can feel how personal “Heroin” is to Lana. I especially like the line “I put you on the aeroplane destined for a foreign land / I thought that you'd come back again to tell me everything's okay” alluding to her denial towards her lover’s drug problem. The instrumental is sparse but it works, lending the track a sobering weight. When she turns this line inward on herself towards the conclusion, it’s a reminder that she's not immune to the drugs that surround her either. Lana got in a lawsuit with Radiohead because the final track, “Get Free”, sounds like Creep, and they were totally right! There’s some great lyrical highlights as Lana tries to embrace positivity in her life: “Take the dead out of the sea / And the darkness from the arts”. The chorus is bouncy and leans towards a summery, surf pop jam. It’s a great song if you can get over the Radiohead similarities

This is Lana’s biggest attempt at making a mainstream pop album and she sounds so unnatural doing it. A good chunk of these songs sound boring, awkward or both. There are some decent ideas and it saves the best for last, but Lust For Life is mostly an unfocused mess that’s way too long and very tedious

Album Review - Lust For Life

Lust For Life is Lana’s attempt to go even bigger and flashier than Born To Die. She leans harder into the hip-hop aesthetic and invites guests like The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky to give the album a boost in star power. Unfortunately the ambitious direction yields mixed results, and Lust For Life is the weakest Lana Del Rey project to date

Lana trades out the lush production of Ultraviolence and Honeymoon, opting for an approach that sounds abrasive and dirty. Sometimes it pays off, like on the title track where the heavy drums and twinkly synths sound like a modern take on “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin. Since The Weeknd is well-versed in this brand of synthpop, he makes for a solid collaborator. Unfortunately the three following songs bring the album’s momentum to a crawl. “13 Beaches” lacks any standout instrumental choices, and “Cherry” is full of awkward backing vocals that sound jarring and corny. “White Mustang” is the worst offender: another Lana song about a bad boy she’s fawning over with instrumentals that offer nothing unique either. It picks up around “Groupie Love” which features inspired percussion that clicks and spatters over the verses, and sensual vocal melodies that sound great over the lush chorus

The album continues to stumble through its middle third. “In My Feelings” is allegedly about her relationship with ex-boyfriend G-Eazy. The sassy lyrics are fun, but the song itself is pretty forgettable. “Couchella - Woodstock in My Mind” is too wordy and disjointed. The beat and various effects seem to have their mind of their own and sound even clunkier paired with Lana’s vocals. The backing synth on “God Bless America - And All the Beautiful Women in It” sounds tacky but otherwise it’s one of the better cuts on the album. I like how Lana contrasts the verses (feeling lonely and vulnerable) with the chorus (celebrating womanhood). I wish “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems” was better than it is. Stevie Nicks sounds older but she’s still got a gorgeous voice. Unfortunately the instrumentals are underdeveloped and the basic lyrics waste her potential
