The Ugly Stepsister: Very similar to The Substance in tone and subject matter, but the difference is that this film has a lot more sympathy for its doomed protagonist and as such functions as a more consistent feminist message! Some of the most visceral body horror I've seen in awhile too. Good shit!

The Smashing Machine: Kind of slow and meandering but not necessarily in a way I hated. The cinematography and music choices really work to give this a certain 'aura' that I found really cool to get lost in. Dwayne Johnson is great and I would love to see more performances like this out of him. It's quiet and strange, and the prosthetics are totally seamless. Someone get me that ambient dream pop cover of the star spangled banner

The sets and the costuming and the cinematography were phenomenal, and the story holding it together is decent! It sometimes falls into standard biopic territory, but the brotherly dynamic at the centre of this story is what really puts it a cut above. The film's real drawback is the length, and especially paired with the film's often slow pace, you can really feel the 3-hour runtime

It really feels like we're in a renaissance of Iranian filmmaking, especially with the Cutting Through Rocks nomination this year as well. I really adore how the film balances humor with some really intense ethical dilemmas. The ending felt somewhat unsatisfying, but the journey to get there was so captivating
