Justin Wolfers explains the REAL reason why Trump & Bessent said today that their first deal will likely be with South Korea - because that country has had zero tariffs on virtually everything from the US for 20 years already.

Simple Or perhaps not

New post from me about Trump's tariffs and why Harold Macmillan was right - we Brits are truly Greece to America's Rome - because our Brexit-era compulsion to think everything was 'simple' has a Trumpian heir. A short thread. 1/n

Nobel Prizes by country and year.

The dominance of Germany is striking every time. Before 1933, that is. And the utter dominance of America (and the UK) after 1945.

As @cpsjournal.bsky.social editor I read about 100 peer-reviews per month. A 🧵 on what makes a great review:

1.) Succinct summary of the contribution (puzzle, argument, data, evidence)

2.) State clearly in your first paragraph whether the evidence supports the argument.

The whole thing is important, but listen until the end: the US depends a lot on the flow of capital into the country because it is perceived as the safest port in a storm. Once that is no longer true, a lot of things Americans take for granted go away.

Elon Musk’s Team Now Has Access to Treasury’s Payments System Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Mr. Musk’s representatives at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency a powerful tool to monitor and potentially limit government spending.

1/ Musk seeking control over nerve systems of the federal government. As someone who spent a decade studying how centralized information systems are used for coercion this is a five alarm fire. We need to name it, identify risks, and seek to mitigate their impacts.
