Book Review: Daindreth’s Assassin by Elisabeth Wheatley After being extremely entertained by Elisabeth Wheatley’s “Book Goblin” videos, and her commentary on various romantic tropes and historical fantasy, I finally decided to read her books. The book I decided to read first was Daindreth’s Assassin, and I was not disappointed. Wheatley has a solid writing style, interesting characters and excellent worldbuilding. Our Protagonist is Amira, the de-legitimised daughter of a king. She is a sorceress, and has been bound by a spell where if she disobeys her father, she gets strangled. Also, he’s using her as an assassin, and her current mission is to assassinate the Archduke of the Empire that had conquered her father’s kingdom.

We have one (1) Dark Lord named Kazimir who needs the safety lock off of a magical artifact, which can only be removed if he marries someone of the bloodline of a (specific) legendary hero. Kazimir of course decides to kidnap Arabella, and force her to marry him. Arabella is not having it, and fights back. This makes Kazimir's black heart grow three sizes.

Lord of the Black Mountain Nemar Jhan, Lord Warden of the Assembly of Five had agreed to a marriage alliance with the kingdom of Sewen. Unfortunately his future bride Teren Kelfin had not--Nemar Jhan being not of the faith and a Necromancer. (A legendary Necromancer-King with a terrifying reputation in Sewen and the other Dosai kingdoms. The alliance is...controversial.) Teren and her twin brother Caris exchange places, to cover her escape. Disguised as his sister, he attempts to assassinate the Lord Warden on their "wedding night." This goes badly for the following reasons: 1) Nemar Jhan is an immortal and cannot be killed.

Book Review: Overgrowth by Mira Grant Stasia Miller has been very up front about being an advanced scout for an alien invasion since she was a child. (Or at least, since the time she disappeared in the woods and may or may not have been kidnapped.) Of course, no one believes her. At best they believe it's a harmless delusion, at worst something that makes her dangerously Other, and therefore deserving of mockery and petty bullying. She has had to deal with a lot of mockery and petty bullying growing up. Of course, it turns out that she is absolutely correct, and the armada is coming.

Book Review: Run Aground by H Birchwood & Key Dyson & Raymond Roach The Tales from the Michigan Fleet series takes a darker turn in Run Aground, when Rich and friends with benefits and perks Liam disappear after attending a landside hoverboard tournament. Given his Hastings "soldier mod" background, (and the party responsible for the kidnapping) there is little hope of being able to find, let alone rescue him. (Hastings have an ethnoreligion where they believe they are all made in Mar's--Roman god of war, not the planet--image, and that they are the "Player Characters" in a gamified universe--and everyone else is an NPC.

Book Review: Brides in the Dark by Jacob Steven Mohr Brides in the Dark is a "modern fairy tale" that plays on a much older category of folktale: the Swanmay/Selkie/Other shapeshifter who must marry whoever stole the skin that enables them to change their shape. In this setting, men capture various kinds of shapeshifter fairy brides. One town goes into a forest to find their brides, another hauls their brides out of the sea. In Our Protagonist's town, men go up into the mountains, and lure their brides out of the air. (It is not explained why the men are kidnapping fairies to have their kids.

This mostly involves me struggling with templates and page design until I get something that doesn't look too horrible. (My web page design chops are entirely from the 90s, sad to say.) Barely Into the new Year and I am Having a Bad Time Honestly, barely into the new year and I am kind of ENRAGED. In November, my apartment complex was bought by a new leasing company, (hereby referred to as Leasing). A company that seems determined to make payment of rent as difficult as humanly possible for people who have some variety of subsidized housing. (Which I do. An organization I'm going to call Assisted Housing takes care of most of my rent, and I pay a smaller amount.)
