In an interview, living legend Nick Gallo says, “It’s kind of insulting. Call the guy by his name. He was a Marlboro Man, yes, but he had a name and it wouldn’t have hurt that book to just mention his name. But (Knight) was mad at Bill because of a lawsuit that happened.”
Knight had a longstanding rivalry with Bill Farrell, under a pseudonym and referred to as “the Marlboro Man”. Farrell was the one who brought those wrestling shoes to New Jersey, New York and PA.
So they saw potential in market expansion from what was essentially a bs pitch from Knight and sent him samples, which is the first deal that started Nike.
Interesting. When he was 24, Phil Knight went to Japan to try and learn about how they made shoes. He met with one company, Onitsuka, whose Tiger wrestling shoe was already very successful in the “northeastern U.S.”
