If this is right then it raises interesting questions about strategy. If it’s really hard to feel jealousy in fitting ways, then we might not want to cultivate it very much.

The ability to say a feeing was out of sync with some object or event seems crucial to emotion cultivation.

Perhaps the useful distinction is between emotions and episodes of emotion. No wrong emotions perhaps, but certainly wrong episodes of emotion and we can work to try and be people who do not feel wrong episodes of emotion often.

Pleasure at someone’s demonstrable suffering, or terror in responce to a passing kindness seem like wrong episodes of emotion.

I’m sympathetic to the sentiment of posts like these, as emotion management is an ongoing practical demand and shame is a barrier to productive conversations, but emotions can be scrutinised for fittingness in all kinds of ways.
