Cartoon. Title: β€œSealed” Two frames. First frame: Deputy PM David Seymour going along a hallway, carrying papers, saying, β€œI’ll just get the boss’s seal on these”. 2nd frame: PM Christopher Luxon bowing and kissing the ring on a hand coming in from the left. Neurodivergent man overwhelmed by Jobseeker admin comes off weekly support Advocates say the problem is extremely concerning and common but officials say there's enough support on offer.

This is a feature, not a bug. The ableism, much like racism and misogyny, is structural and a flow on effect of political choices. #nzpol

Why You Should Design for Feature Rollbacks (Not Just Rollouts) You’ve just shipped a shiny new feature. Everything seems perfect… until users start flooding your...

Are you ready to rollback?

This is a really pragmatic guide to thinking about rollback as well as rollout when planning your systems. Rollback can be an important part of incident response and we shouldn't underestimate how hard it can be.

The fucking audacity of _this_ particular government asking subsequent governments to not revert changes.

I'll vote for whoever runs on repealing all their dumbshit changes.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

It's likely the FSU candidates get into the board of INZ. However the AGM votes have prevented the reactionary attempt to undermine the constitution and structure of the organisation. Next year, we do this again.

If you joined InternetNZ to help stop the takeover by rhe FSU and Hobson's Pledge, you've done some great work tonight

Consider bringing that energy to other civil society organisations, groups like Voices for Freedom are also trying to take advantage of low participation to push their agenda

David Fararr's first 3 motions got defeated by 2/3 of the votes cast and now we know how many FSU-aligned people are attending and voting at the AGM.

At least, no matter what, nobody will have grounds to complain that they did not have a fair chance to vote. Boy if the Board is not being super careful with that one. We are a full 30 minutes into intro, explaining, giving people eons of time to cast those first votes, plus extra time for support.
