We all have films we would literally watch any time. My ultimate measure of these is a thing called the 3am Test. Basically, if someone woke you up at 3am and said ‘Hey - do you want to watch [insert name of movie here]?’ would you tell them to **** off or would you say ‘Yeah, OK then…’?

I shouldn’t need to say this, but thought and behaviour are two related but different things. I might, for example, nod and smile in response to what someone says, because it’s courteous to do so, while thinking ‘This is bullshit - no way am I wasting bandwidth on this random fucking idiot’.

When I was writing a series of historical novels I used Pinterest a lot as a kind of library of visual research. Didn’t use it for years, then went back to it recently and most of the images coming up were AI - which rendered it useless to me.

I think ultimately its impact on creative arts will be more akin to Photoshop or synthesizers than I, Robot.

I am a screenwriter, and I think the threat to my craft exaggerated and misunderstood, even though some of those misunderstanding it are studio execs who dream of creating movies at the touch of a button (bad news: it’s possible; good news: they’re shit). What concerns me is ownership of my work.

I can’t think of a single tech development that was stopped by humans. AI is not going away - but we can control it or bury our heads in the sand. It will become a regular tool, but where it is unreliable it won’t be relied upon. Where it is cheaper and easier to use humans, humans will be used.
