Introduction (Subtleties of Color, Part 1 of 6) - NASA Science The purpose of data visualizationβ€”any data visualizationβ€”is to illuminate data. To show patterns and relationships that are otherwise hidden in an impenetrable mass of numbers.

Looks like my full series on using color in #dataviz finally made the migration to the new NASA science website: science.nasa.gov/blogs/earth-...

If you’re new to visualization, or just want a refresher, it covers the basics of color theory, how to build a palette, plus some tips & tricks.

A yellow-and-blue poster titled on the bottom as "Projection Connections." It shows a complex flowchart of dozens of map projections. Each projection is shown as a pale yellow tile which contains the projection name and the appearance of its graticule, linked by patterned pipes on a dark teal geometric background. The pattern on each connecting line gives information on the relationships between projections.

More details from the poster, showing several uncommon projections, as well as some familiar ones. For example, the Goode Homolosine is shown, an connected to the Sinusoidal and Mollweide projections, since it is a fusion of the two.

A few years ago I made this poster and released it as a free PDF (somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2022/12/19/p...). This week, I learned from a colleague that it has actually been posted in an educational setting!

Building a Bivariate Color Scheme Bivariate maps can be very effective, but the colors you choose can make or break them. Here is some guidance on how to manage that.

A lot of snow (and ice) fell across the U.S. over the weekend. I decided to map snow depth totals in the Mid-Atlantic, and experiment with some new color ramps.

Here's a blog I wrote last year on mapping snow with SNODAS data: www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/...

I love weather and I love maps. So when there is an incoming snow storm it is interesting for me to see how different news agencies are mapping the event.

Here are examples from @nytimes.com @washingtonpost.com @cnn.com. Any others you've seen that work well (or don't)?

Your Zodiac Sign Is 2,000 Years Out of Date Over millennia, our view of the stars has shifted, because of Earth’s wobble. It may be time to rethink your sign.

Zodiac signs were originally based on the stars. But over thousands of years, our view of the stars has shifted. That means, if you account for this shift, your sign might not be what you think.
