I keep spinning that perfect summation through my mind, b/c wow, if there’s a single superpower that I wish I could somehow magically confer upon every author and illustrator I know, it’s the publishing version of that. 2/2

“She’s figured out how to compete without carrying the weight of it!” is what one of the announcers said in awe of Alyssa Liu’s luminous free skate yesterday. 1/2

NYT: Federal Agents Kill a 37-Year-Old
Minneapolis Man
The victim was an American citizen with no criminal record who had a firearms permit, the city police chief said. Videos of the encounter contradict the federal
government's description of the shooting, a New York Times analysis found.

years and years of avoiding plain language and the active voice do make the choice to use it more impactful, I suppose

A thing that will never not astonish me is being on an airplane, quietly watching a stranger watching the movie of a book that was once merely a stack of paper on my desk, in my hands. Publishing, you wild, surreal, perpetually-confounding beast of a business, you still have your moments!

As authors generally, and as authors for children specifically, our whole job is to remove ourselves from the page and make space for the reader. Let the reader build the world. Let the reader have the space to define the story - and their own story - for themselves. It's a great responsibilty.

Look, I love a good physical holiday card. Send me photos of your kids + dogs + Santa & they will live on my fridge all year. I'll even read your annual family letter! But corporate-style digital holiday cards, even from folks I love/admire, leave me utterly hollow & Grinchy, in this message I will
