There's a lot of arcade games which I think are superb but their settings are an afterthought or genericised. I like playing The King of Dragons is dope af but it's set in fantasy nowhere and doesn't stick with me like some old sidescrollers might.

I don't think a setting has to be even richly detailed or super engaging, I get a lot of mileage from fixed games with cool backgrounds too like Cosmic Smash and Rez just because conceptually I think Cyberspace is an appealing place to spend time.

I think of Red Dead as an example, RDR1 and 2 play similar and are both shitty but RDR2 is a much more fun virtual space, it has more details and more interesting things to see, I can spend time camping or hunting or looking for secrets, it's a more fun setting and place to be in.

I think I depart a lot from my arcade gamer oomfies in that I am very willing to enjoy bad or mid games so long as I get to spend time in a virtual environment that feels unique and fun to be in, I value good gameplay but also a good setting is really important to me.
