Congratulations, Professor Sykes! This sounds like such important work in underpinning the importance of remembering our ancient history and preserving its study!

Well, it is FUN to be back! I had the best evening at the Radio Theatre, recording the first couple of eps for the new series (with help from the brilliant and hysterical Islam Issa and @adamrutherford.bsky.social). And with help from you guys, the best audience in radio 🐝

We are giving away an English language copy of one of my books for each month of 2026, to a school or college library who makes a request. If you’d also like a foreign language edition -

This was a lot of fun, even if I took an embarrassingly long time!

Another coffee is in order, I think.

Reading The Mercian Chronicles is giving a classic example of The Tiffany Problem - something that seems out of place in history because it’s so β€œmodernβ€œ (but is, in fact, ancient). I’m reading a lot about Bishop Chad, and can only think of medieval memes.

February's book: The Mercian Chronicles: King Offa and the Birth of the Anglo-Saxon State, AD 630–918 by Max Adams

We teach about Roman Britain, but late antique Britain hardly ever comes up in classics, so I'm excited to explore this book and see what links we can make.

First thoughts on Friday.

A good book is a real joy. If we can claim it as CPD, that's all the better. To that end, I'm launching 'Ad Fontes' - an asynchronous bookclub here on Bluesky. Each month, I'll share a book I'm reading and then post weekly reflections on the knowledge as I work through.

First book details incoming!

This is one of the reasons I’m proud to be working with @classicsforall.bsky.social on our mission to ensure classical subjects are accessible to everyone across the country.
