Unexpected Levels of Biological Activity during the Polar Night Offer New Perspectives on a Warming Arctic Berge et al. provide evidence that challenges the classical paradigm of biological quiescence during the Arctic polar night. Instead of an ecosystem that has entered a resting state, they document a system in which diversity, activity levels, and biological interactions across most trophic levels and phyla remain high during the winter.
