In a time of heated debates and federal authorities disproportionately targeting immigrants from Mexico, it’s important to recognize the contributions of Mexican immigrants, their descendants and our culture to the United States. We don’t have to justify our presence here. We are America.

Burritos aren’t just a popular food. They represent the legacy of Mexican immigrants who brought our culture, traditions and ingenuity to the Bay Area.

What is the Bay Area’s most important culinary creation?

The Mission-style burrito. Yes, this iconic extremely versatile dish is known and loved worldwide. I spent some time talking with burriteurs (yes, I made that up) for an event, Forum episode and column I produced for KQED.
