This is amazing.

When the government kills a crucial report, independent scientists decide to write it anyway and release it outside of government channels.

That’s science serving society, even when our political leaders don’t.

Hi #EarlyModern Bluesky - did you know that someone brilliant has built working printing presses using Lego and they are trying to get enough supporters so that Lego will release it as a kit?

They look so cool!

once again, the dark outline cut away to reveal light-colored patchwork words: MAKE SOMETHING, now with a matching piece that says BETTER.

Day 11 of sticks & string: a better Better:

"I think the LLM is conscious" makes a lot more sense when you realize a lot of people don't grasp the interiority of other people.

If you view other people as a series of inputs and utilities, it makes a lot of sense that you would see inert code awaiting your prompt as conscious.

It took 12,000 years for us to give wolves anxiety, so I see this as a testament to the unrivaled creative power of the human imagination.

Why We Must Fight to Stop HR 7661 Before It Destroys the Lives of American Children Lately I’ve been calling my House rep and screaming about one zillion things, and maybe you have too. But today I want to talk about one thing in particular you should add to your list: H.R. 7661 i…

I wrote about the first national book banning bill, which effectively seeks to erase trans people. At the end I include a link to let your reps know that you oppose this bill and all it stands for. lithub.com/why-we-must-...

The dark-outline-patchwork-cutout-letters saying MAKE SOMETHING have been joined by a strip with barely-legible crazy-quilt pieced letters saying BETTER.
This is *not* going to be the final version.

Day 10, quilt-piecing letters! There's a little voice in my head-- I think it's Arthur Dent-- saying "That's not better than *anything*!"
(there's potential for this style, I think, but it'll require a little more color planning...)

same piece of driftwood as day 8, but now as well as the kind of net-like section with some beads, it has an irregular blob of crochet lace with frilly edges attached to it.

Day 9 (discontinuous... I didn't say *which* hundred days I was doing...) crocheting lichen, or something:

a smallish piece of driftwood with off-white string crocheted around it & some blue glass beads sewn on. a smallish piece of driftwood with off-white string crocheted around it & some blue glass beads sewn on. From this angle you can (sort of) see that the driftwood is actually two branches that grew together while they were alive.

Day 8 back to playing with driftwood, now with crochet cotton which does not catch & shred when pulled through things:

Day 7 was plying:

I try to preach the opposite of imposter syndrome to creative people. Know that you are literally the only person on the planet equipped to tell the very specific stories you have to tell in the way only you can tell them.

Ending world hunger costs less than 1% of military spending Ending hunger by 2030 would cost just $93 billion a year — well under one per cent of the $21.9 trillion spent on military budgets over the past decade, according to UN estimates.

With the US military spending $1 billion a day on a pedophile's whims, remember that the UN estimates that it costs about $93 billion to end world hunger.

The *first* 93 days of this decade+ war, could be spent ending world hunger, if anyone in power actually wanted to

I know that the people who need to read this aren’t here, but here goes:

Rules of engagement aren’t for the enemy. They’re for you. They’re for your soldiers when they’re captured or wounded. They’re for your civilians when they’re in range of the enemy. They’re for your allies, to reassure.

If you can provide $3k checks for the entire middle class of America by taxing 900 people a little more, not only should you do it, but you should take it as a signal that your monetary system is broken

Obviously this isn't everyone, so fingers crossed for you.

rather, I hope
that you are angry
and worried,
rather, I hope
that you are saddened
and not numb,
at a time such as this
it would be strange
to hope

if the US government logs these trees at the rate / quantity they're proposing, we'll lose one of the last old-growth forests. there's no coming back from that. if you have five minutes to leave a comment pushing back against the BLM, please do; there's a guide to that below.

Florence As It Was - Florence As It Was

Instead of this nonsense, fund actual research projects doing digital city reconstructions. Here is one I found useful when I was researching Mercutio: florenceasitwas.wlu.edu
