Beautiful statement from Ayman Odeh, Palestinian MK and head of Hadash-Taal. For those who do not read Hebrew, I will translate:
I guess part of that is pre-internet when you couldn't just look up pictures of things you were stuck with your best recollection of the VHS tape you had rented once or twice to go by
Like it's weird because they don't even look that alike (particularly in the incarnations of the latter that were around when I was a kid) but I was so convinced they were the same guy
doing the thing with my anxiety where I basically take it to the dog park and play fetch with it for hours until it has trouble walking the ball back to me
As a kid I conflated these two guys so completely that I'm pretty sure I thought it was some kind of co-branding tie in?
One of the most texturally delicious food things is when you take a crunchy thing and then sauce it up so it's JUST on the edge between crunchy and soggy, fried-and-sauced Chinese/American-Chinese dishes or poutine or croutons in a Caesar salad or even just a bowl of cereal it's all so good
As realistic as
Pet peeve: When someone on the internet makes a very mainstream reference that of course everyone reading it is going to understand but then fifty people reply with "ahhh I see what you did there" or "love the ____ reference" as they had decoded some obscure inside easter egg
Like this winter COVID transmission rates have been pretty low in my locality but I still have been masking in crowded indoor spaces because we've been at transmission-alert levels for this year's particularly nasty flu strain.
Re: "still wearing masks" honestly 2020 was a wake up call that we probably should have been already at least in certain contexts, especially during peak respiratory illness transmission season?
And the wildest part is they're working on artificially pumping a metric that will never be disclosed externally lest it give creators leverage, just one department of a big company pulling one over on another and everything sucks more for us humans for it
YES! We only learn not to be little shits by people saying "hey you're being a little shit"
I really wish it were possible to note that somebody acted like a little shit without that being treated like a total absence of moral character, which then spawns a lot of responses about *not* lacking moral character, which distract from the original issue, which was acting like a little shit.
FWIW I'm very much a fan of "have a good one" anyways, the ambiguity prevents both sender-side problems (e.g. embarrassment of accidentally saying "have a good morning" after noon) and receiver-side ones (e.g. hearing well-meaning "have a good weekend"s all Friday when you work a restaurant week)
Keeping this unbeatable rebuttal in my back pocket for the next time I hear someone griping about the natural linguistic evolution of small talk set phrases as if it was the end of civilization as we know it
Shady cabals acting behind the scenes are always conceptually attractive because there is comfort in things happening for a coherent reason even if that reason is malign, but we live in incoherent and unreasonable times.
THIS. I will not deny there are eschatological accellerationists out there who are excited about this but the idea they're secretly behind it all when the more obvious and immediate explanation is fully sufficient feels like a stretch.
(Also they're a cool accessory that'll complete any outfit so win win)
Genuine tip: if you don't currently, buy and wear a (dumb) watch. I'd gotten a little out of the habit in the lockdown years but it's so good for the old brain to not have to pull the everything-bad-delivered-no-waiting device out every time you want to know the time.
This is dope
Really shameful to have robots taking away the not-understanding-a-joke jobs traditionally done by human Bluesky users
"Calling it 'learning' doesn't make it learning"
"Nuh-uh, see, they call it learning!"
Something that I think about a lot is pick a random nonavian dinosaur genus and ask "why did they go extinct" and the majority of the time the answer won't be "Chicxulub," so many dinosaurs arose, had their time, and went away before that final fireworks show...
One of my great inconsistencies is I love ST:TNG and I love Babylon 5 but have never been able to click in to ST:DS9 which is like the arithmetic mean of those first two things
Cis people need to pay attention to the way they communicate this. They freely admit that after all of their research, they came up with zero evidence that HRT was harmful.
Then they banned it anyway, claiming their inability to find a reason is a reason in of itself.
Do not be so fast to ascribe to evil genius that which can be easily explained by evil stupidity
If you want to impress company with relatively low effort make this it's even better than it looks
If this barrel could speak, it would probably say: “Hello, stranger - I saw you here yesterday, thinking the same thought as you’re thinking today: what if I could speak? Aha! Well, now…”
