It really relies on nostalgia (for it specifically, or 90's anime in general), especially the dub. The other Gundam productions around the same time, X and 08th MS Team, have held up better, IMO.
If you haven't played Tactics Ogre Reborn yet, that's a great follow-up to FFT (despite actually being the spiritual prequel). Similar complicated plot and characters (with lots of alternate paths if certain decisions are made or characters spared), and the same QoL changes (like VO) as FFT.
They should be more subtly threatening:
