Periodic cooking of eggs - Communications Engineering Emilia Di Lorenzo and colleagues propose an approach to address the energy transport problem of cooking the albumen and yolk of a boiled egg at their optimal temperatures without separation. By alternating immersion in boiling water and water at 30โˆ˜C, the researchers achieve a fully set albumen similar to a soft boiled egg but with a creamy yolk similar to that of an egg cooked sous vide. The approach potentially offers nutritional benefit compared to other cooking approaches.

The candidate is expected to further develop the pumps and work with clinicians at the Gregorio Maraรฑon hospital (Madrid). They are pioneers in pediatric ECMO, and we have a swine model to validate our pumps.

This is a very "out-of-the-box" project, so a highly dynamic person is needed.

We're hiring! I need a mechanical/biomedical engineer to work on blood pumping for ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation): euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/374571

It is using our 'magnetostaltic' pumps, first shown in our 2020 Nature paper: rdcu.be/b3ZuF (see Fig. 4). We have since scaled to 1 L/min.

Remember this? In the 1990s, a popular view of nanotechnology claimed that molecular gears like this, made of diamondoid carbon, were going to be the components of molecular-scale assemblers and nanobots. But that vision hasn't come to pass. My article in Aeon explores why.

The overall outcome is much faster and cheaper DNA sequencing, hopefully enabling real-time patient NGS even in smaller hospitals. Huge shout-out to first author Yanzhe Qin for coordinating this effort, and happy I could make a contribution to understanding the fluid dynamics in this system!

and 3) DNA sequencing quality and precision remains good!

Surprisingly, this turns out to have many amazing advantages: 1) you don't need to worry about pressure drop (which is negligible), and therefore it can be easily scaled to large chip areas, 2) the mass transport is very fast (< 2 s) and efficient (5โ€“85 better than traditional flow cells)

The 1st textbook introduction to fluid flows uses Plane Couette Flow, with "moving walls"... unfortunately, this "hypothetical" case is hardly used in practice, because how to move walls to control fluid flow in a practical way? Well, this has now been solved in the current work.

Fast, cost-effective and flexible DNA sequencing by roll-to-roll fluidics - Nature Methods This work introduces roll-to-roll fluidics, a method that enhances reagent efficiency and reduces turnaround time, enabling rapid and economical next-generation sequencing.

Introducing "roll-to-roll fluidics" to greatly accelerate the speed of DNA sequencing, now published in Nature Methods: lnkd.in/dYSb_Mex, and soon commercially available via @MGI. Short (fluidics focussed thread):

Soft magnetic hysteresis in a dysprosium amideโ€“alkene complex up to 100 kelvin - Nature A dysprosium amideโ€“alkene complex shows soft magnetic hysteresis loops up to 100โ€‰kelvin, arising from the high charge density of the amide ligands and the structural role of the pendant alkene.
