At THRT, we fund research that replaces animal testing with human-relevant methods like QSAR - which use computer simulations to forecast toxicity and drug responses.
It’s science that’s smarter, faster, and kinder.
Organoids are made from pluripotent stem cells, which have the unique ability to differentiate into any cell type in the body.
By essentially recreating an organ, researchers can mimic biological processes, study diseases that affect that organ, and test potential treatments.
We're funding @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social scientists to study the cellular mechanisms underlying neurological conditions like Alzheimer's. 🧠
They're using human cortical cells grown in the lab, enabling them to model these kinds of conditions much more effectively.

The 'smoking beagles' scandal of the 1970s brought huge public attention to the horrors of animal testing.
But dogs are STILL used in UK medical research.
Putting aside moral concerns, findings from animal studies often do not translate when applied to humans.
That's why we call the animal-free methods that our scientists develop, 'human-relevant'. It means they can produce research results that are actually applicable to people, not lab mice.

"85% of human DNA is shared with mice" is a claim often used to justify rodent research models.
But similarity in DNA sequence =/= similarity in biology.
Even small genetic differences matter. That's why we're so focused on funding human-relevant approaches to medical research.
Genetic modification. Organ removals or transplants. Exposure to dangerous/painful chemicals. Forced breeding. Infection with disease. Food, water, or sleep deprivation. Repeated drugging. Electrocution.
These are just some of the procedures that laboratory animals can face.
