It probably doesn't help that people in the states are being actively persecuted based on their social media content. πŸ˜”

And why some ... big name ... Aussie academics are still exclusively posting on Twitter/X is totally lost on me.

I wish they'd all come over to Bluesky instead. Having to traverse all the 'LinkedIn style' posts on LinkedIn makes me close it every time. It doesn't feel like there is an 'academic LinkedIn' in the way it feels like there is academic Bluesky.

Are there any openings for Australian early-career academics currently working internationally?

The Difference Between β€œSignificant” and β€œNot Significant” is not Itself Statistically Significant It is common to summarize statistical comparisons by declarations of statistical significance or nonsignificance. Here we discuss one problem with such declarations, namely that changes in statisti...

all this talk about changes in p-value magnitude being interpreted as an increase in the "quality of evidence" necessitates that i share this. we all should share and actually read this in fact (for starters).

The recent court documents showed that Google's internal testing demonstrated that significantly worse search results would not harm their business operations. This apparent immunity to quality concerns stems from the company's dominant market position, which the recent federal court ruling addressed.

"Since Google doesn't have any real competition, it can make the best information hard to find, forcing users to stay on Google for longer and interact with more ads," Papadimitriou said. "This is dangerous for consumers, most of whom think the best results appear first."

The strategy appears to be working from a business perspective. The study suggests that poor organic search results actually benefit Google's bottom line in two ways: they make paid advertisements more valuable to users seeking accurate information, and they force users to refine their searches multiple times, exposing them to more advertising in the process.

The Risks of Dutton’s Rule: Prioritising Power Over People Scan any political thread on social media, and one theme stands out: progressive Australians are deeply alarmed about the prospect of a Peter Dutton-led government upending the nation’s way of life. W...

Fear of a Dutton govt is justified.

Dutton has proven over the years he has no problem punching down on minorities, persecuting immigrants & opposing policy that would benefit workers, education, health & the planet while enriching wealthy benefactors.

Vote NO to Dutton

New research out in Psychophysiology (doi.org/10.1111/psyp...). The EEG aperiodic slope, thought to reflect cortical excitatory/inhibitory balance, was linked to temperament traits (surgency, regulation) in infancy and moderated associations between maternal anxiety/depression and infant regulation.
