Rates of most distress measures peaked during the COVID years (2020-21). The proportion of teens repetitively self-harming did not return to pre-COVID levels, unlike other measures of distress.

#Cybervictimisation #Cyberbullying #YouthMentalHealth #MentalHealthResearch
A special thank you to all E-Risk participants and the @eriskstudy.bsky.social team for making this research possible.
Co-authors: Flora Blangis, @niamhdooley.bsky.social =, Helen Fisher, Tim Matthews, and @candiceodgers.bsky.social
Implications:
β‘οΈ When a young person reports being bullied online, itβs important to look beyond the screen.
β‘οΈTo impact young people's mental health, we need to consider offline and online challenges + provide early support for anxiety + shape policies around social media use.
We found:
2οΈβ£ Cybervictimisation was linked to a range of #mentalhealth conditions, but anxiety disorder was the only one independently associated after accounting for family background and offline forms of victimisation.
πΊοΈ Cybervictimisation is a major public health issue worldwide. What if, beyond the screen, other challenges in their lives might also contribute to this risk?
We found:
1οΈβ£ 1 in 5 young people experienced cybervictimisation during adolescence, and many had also faced other types of victimisation.
π» Does Cybervictimisation contribute to poor mental health in young people?
In our new paper in the @lancetchildadol.bsky.social, led by Dr FrΓ©dΓ©ric ThΓ©riault-Couture, we found that 1 in 5 young people were cybervictimised during adolescence, and it contributed to anxiety.
