Nearly 20 years in education and I’ve never seen a government like this one.
Just looking for any excuse to take over schools. #OntEd #onpoli

And now the Peel District School Board Trustees have been fired by the Ford Government. One by one, they’ll take them all if we can’t stop them. #onpoli #omted news.ontario.ca/en/release/1...
Every parent and educator in Ontario needs to be alarmed that Paul Calandra is visiting charter schools.
His government has starved our public schools of resources.
The next page in the Conservative playbook is to offer privatization as the solution to problems they caused.
The student who bought me this thoughtful gift will be in my class for the last time today writing her exam, so I’ve decided to dress to show my appreciation. 🙂
That’s the problem with nostalgia media. Half the time it’s not clear if it’s aimed at introducing an old franchise to a new generation or attracting the generation that grew up with it. Sometimes they try to do both and it does neither.
I love that when I walked into my department office and asked if anyone knew where I can find the hammers for hitting students it was understood that I intended to demonstrate the knee jerk reflex arc and not… something else. 😂
I’m tired of hearing that my classes are bigger because of budget cuts. That I have to cut back on printing resources because of cuts. That I can’t use Google Drive anymore because of cuts. That there’s a teacher shortage, but boards can’t hire because of cuts 🤦🏾♂️

This is a bad step down a slippery slope of school board supervision.
Large class sizes save money, but at the cost of student support. #OntEd #onpoli

New rule for tomorrow, folks:
If you accidentally write the year 2025 on anything you get to go home early. 😉
As I recently explained to a friend, I believe that retention is a larger problem than recruitment. Many people want to be teachers, but burnout and other factors make it hard to stay.
This piece doesn’t discuss it, but we also need better representation.

Who says that learning can’t happen on the last day before the holidays?
Molecular genetics: extracting DNA from strawberries.
Modeling photosynthesis
Cleaning up around the house and came across these…
I was immensely proud of these as a kid!
No athletics trophies. I was always a nerd! 😁
Teachers are Fighting on the Front Lines While the System Leaves Them Stranded.
Excellent article by @jbradshaw.bsky.social (sorry, no commentary this time)
I'm proud to have been invited to contribute this article to @byblacks.bsky.social magazine: byblacks.com/opinion/item...
O Canada! That’s right, USA! We’re at the #WorldSeries and there’s nothing you can do about it! #WANTITALL

Standardized testing rant:
Standardized means the same for all, even when it is not equitable or fair.
This means that a nonverbal child is not allowed to point to the letters they know.
If they can’t SAY the letters aloud they score zero on the test.
This is the worst timeline.
Measuring osmosis in potatoes in hypotonic and hypertonic solutions to determine the potato's internal concentration.
Herein lies the catch-22 of #BlackExcellence: when we don’t excel it’s because we’re lazy and untalented. When we do excel it’s because we exploited “Identity Politics”.
Why would a stranger who knows nothing about me assume I haven’t earned what I’ve achieved? 🤔
An unexpected letter from a former student was just the pick-me-up I needed. 🥲
This is so rare and wonderful! Every once in a while you get to have a true dialogue with someone who has a contrary opinion to your own and it doesn’t feel like a fight. You both walk away feeling respected and heard and maybe understanding the other’s viewpoint a little better.
Twilight in Toronto.
One of my grade 12 students told me that she’s a fan of this “old” animated series, Voltron…
She meant the 2016 reboot, not the 80s original.
Effective science communication is an underrated but vital skill, especially in modern times. Thank you, Bill Nye.
I’m looking for folks to follow on here: educators and those who are education adjacent. Journalists and politicians who care about public education. Scientists. Marginalized voices. People who left Twitter because it was too toxic. Or anyone who’s just into nerdy stuff.
I've never felt such a steep generational divide as I do teaching 9th graders right now. They wanted to record me saying "sixty-seven". (nope)
When I showed them part of BBC's "Life" (2009) a student asked if it was real or A.I. generated.
Testing for the presence of macromolecules in various types of milk and dairy products.
Scientific investigation. What factors affect the size of the balloon? Make a hypothesis, identify variables, and have at it!
Do people realize that other than the de-streaming of grade 9, the Ontario grades 9-12 science curriculum hasn't been updated in nearly 20 years? We're talking pre-iPhone, Pluto just recently demoted times. #OntEd
