I Confess (1953) The suspense in this taut Hitchcock thriller shot on location in Québec isn’t who dunnit or how or why but whether or not any of the characters who know about it will ’fess up. Beyond the central one, the character motivations are a mess, but it’s still a compelling story well told.

Probably (historytimelines.co/timeline/lla...), but not certainly.

I feel for the other patients here, who are mostly a decade
or more older than me and lack even the nostalgic connection to this miserable music.

Doctor’s office waiting room is playing a very narrow band of mid-1990s “alt-rock” top 40 (Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, DMB, Bush, Counting Crows, Hootie, etc.). Awful. Hated it then and it is unchanged by time. Miserable, soulless, artless crap.

Hey, @mikiesherrill.bsky.social: Dispatch from the Brunswicks:

High and Low (1963) Half morality play, part police procedural, this modern-dress Kurosawa film turns on a contrast between a have and a have-not, but what the have ultimately has that the have-not has not is high moral character. A masterfully composed thriller but a touch overlong. Recommended.

Roofman (2025) A gentle true-crime story about a clever and big-hearted criminal who is neither smart nor sensitive enough to understand the harm he causes. Buoyed Channing Tatum's inviting lead performance and a deep cast. Imperfect but an enjoyable low-stakes yarn. Nothing like the zany trailer.

That Bradley Cooper figure looks exactly like Ryan Reynolds.

My first thought: Oh, what a great picture.

My second thought: Why is Shane Victorino on Ichiro's HOF plaque?

This account would be so improved with alt-text, even if it's just the name of the show and the year(s).

I'm honored to have President @barackobama.bsky.social on Team Mikie.

This movement is about delivering something better for New Jersey — lower costs, more opportunity for our kids, and a government that's truly accountable to the people.

I love that Murphy gives him the space to talk . . . and then the proud-pappa face at the end. 🥰

One Battle After Another (2025) I was unnerved by the ways in which this film, conceived & completed before our current authoritarian moment, reflects (through a funhouse mirror) our current authoritarian moment. Unsettling & off-putting; I struggled to engage with it & am not motivated to rewatch.

The Judge "narrative" stuff on the broadcast was driving me crazy.

[Judge enters game with 1.024 OPS this postseason]
"He's just too good a hitter for this to not turn around"
[Judge HRs]
"Finally, Judge has his moment!"
[graphic shows Judge w/ 17 career postseason HRs, two more than Babe Ruth]

As a late (young) Gen Xer, it disturbs me that the "old men" of baseball are "a generation" younger than me.

Depending on where you start counting, and if you include Pin Ups, #12 is somewhere from "Heroes" to Let's Dance in David Bowie's discography.

If you disqualify Graffiti Bridge as a soundtrack/compilation of unreleased material, Diamonds and Pearls is in the conversation.

Pregame show: “it all comes down to this!”

This is the first game of a best-of-five series in the second of four rounds of playoffs. It very much does *not* all come down to this.

Schlittler threw 90% fastballs, 10% breaking balls.

All 18 swing and misses on fastballs. 12 K, 0 BB.

Maybe the most shove it down your throat and nothing you can do about it pitching performances in baseball history.

Yankees/Blue Jays ALDS

Cross 'em off the list: the Blue Jays are 1 of 4 teams the Yankees have never faced in the postseason (White Sox, Nationals/Expos, and Rockies)

That was back when Fox was a new network and had like five shows. I watched Duet back in those days when watched four sitcoms each night of the week after watching four others in reruns after school. Nice pull.

Right right. Sorry. Yes.

Valid. Still, simple solution: cut the Wild Card round and the two extra teams that make the playoffs, bring back tiebreakers.

» The Holy Trinity: 1904 Bronx Banter

No, the Yankees needed to sweep the DH, so they were eliminated with the loss, but their season wasn't ended by it; they still got to play the nightcap. I told this story at some length on Bronx Banter . . . *20* years ago (woof). I good read, still, I hope: www.bronxbanterblog.com/2005/09/30/t...

It did happen twice in 2020, though I’m aware of the caveats.

The Chesbro game was the last day of the season, but Game 1 of a doubleheader, so not an elimination game.

I’m less annoyed by replay umpires calling guys out for coming off the bag than most, but I think, if you reach the base safely and then come off, you should get credit for the stolen base (or double, etc.), and the out should count as a pick-off.

That would be an improvement, for sure.
