There was a time where the toxic users were a smaller minority. People followed the unspoken fandom etiquette more. Social media also worked differently, the algorithm didn't just feed you stuff on it's own based on some likes - you had the option to cruate your own experience much better.
I used to have a desire to create my own webcomic but seeing how female creators are treated online... it's not worth it. Internet always had toxic people ofc, but it got so much worse now that everyone is on the internet and the pandemic brought a lot of "normies" into fandom spaces.
