This is why I'm ultimately kind of sanguine about Hollywood consolidation compared to the other negative effects of oligarch media control (like for news). You really can't make someone pay money to watch a movie that they don't want to!

If your entertainment business strategy is based on trying to make stuff that you think people want to watch, it is possible – though by no means guaranteed – that it will succeed.

If it's based on *telling people* what to watch, it is guaranteed to fail.

people are putting forward explanations. i think most of them make sense. but they all in some sense involve the press allowing trump and his most dedicated supporters to decide whether a story about their unpopularity is legitimate. in a democratic society, the leader is not the assignment editor

ya like to the extent the "we want to show our readers all the sides of the big arguments in public discourse" is a laudable goal (i'm sketpical) its really, really important that you actually are publishing genuine arguments and not dishonest propaganda designed to dupe people!

Yes. Like I really can't emphasize enough how much "the author of the piece and editors who commissioned it should themselves genuinely believe in the argument that the piece is making" be a minimum standard for opinion pieces and yet bsky.app/profile/theo...

I've published a few op-eds and on one occasion had a fact checker push back on an assertion I made, which forced a revision of the piece, and the piece was better for it and I was grateful to have a more accurate piece under by byline. None of this is hard. Don't print lies in the newspaper.
