Q. In the top of our story, we talk about the rally you attended in Managua and a wire report at the time said that there were anti-American chants from the crowd.
The United States at that time - I don't know how much you know about this — was actively supporting the Contras to overthrow the government. So that there's anti-American sentiment? I remember that, I remember that event very clearly.
You do recall hearing those chants? I think the wire report has them saying, "Here, there, everywhere, the Yankee will die." hey were fighting against American -- Huh huh--yes, what is your point?
I wanted to ——
Are you shocked to learn that there was anti-American sentiment?
My point was I wanted to know if you had heard that.
I don't remember, no. Of course there was anti-American sentiment there. This was a war being funded by the United States against the people of Nicaragua. People were being killed in that war.
Do you think if you had heard that directly, you would have stayed at the rally?
I think Sydney, with all due respect, you don't understand a word that I'm saying.

Reminder that Trump is receiving some kind of ongoing medical treatment that includes a huge number of blood draws &/or IV infusions, he’s got something on his neck, he’s got dementia, & we know nothing about his diagnoses, treatment (including medications & side effects), capacity, or prognosis

two days into the war and he's already trying to pass the blame off to Biden for why things aren't going perfectly. Any other president would be getting buried by the media right now, but Trump bought and corrupted ours.

Not related but for years there had been speculation that Kubrick staged or doctored (beyond adding Nicholson) this photo to include fucked up and uncanny looking faces but recently someone uncovered the real original photo and it turns out it's all in the real photo and they were just British

i had an uber driver in baltimore yesterday who used his theory that john hinckley was a patsy to segue into the conspiracies he's workshopping on who really shot charlie kirk if anyone wants to pay me to write up the interview, he was a white guy in his fifties so it's a matter of national scrutiny

feel like its the same dynamic where you can learn to put up with and even love someone who you would normally avoid being around or talking to, if they happen to become part of your family and you thus have to see them regularly

thats the front side, the back side is where there's 10 years of lawsuits after it finally gets passed trying to claw it back on a technicality before it can actually be implemented

amending the constitution via ballot referendum to remove the rule that would prevent us from establishing a commission to study the effects of changing the daylight savings times rules pending new congressional legislation and a 2/3rds vote of legislature etc

its typical california government stuff where they passed a ballot referendum that removes exactly one of six potential veto points for actually doing something

This is why I'm ultimately kind of sanguine about Hollywood consolidation compared to the other negative effects of oligarch media control (like for news). You really can't make someone pay money to watch a movie that they don't want to!

If your entertainment business strategy is based on trying to make stuff that you think people want to watch, it is possible – though by no means guaranteed – that it will succeed.
If it's based on *telling people* what to watch, it is guaranteed to fail.

people are putting forward explanations. i think most of them make sense. but they all in some sense involve the press allowing trump and his most dedicated supporters to decide whether a story about their unpopularity is legitimate. in a democratic society, the leader is not the assignment editor

ya like to the extent the "we want to show our readers all the sides of the big arguments in public discourse" is a laudable goal (i'm sketpical) its really, really important that you actually are publishing genuine arguments and not dishonest propaganda designed to dupe people!

Yes. Like I really can't emphasize enough how much "the author of the piece and editors who commissioned it should themselves genuinely believe in the argument that the piece is making" be a minimum standard for opinion pieces and yet bsky.app/profile/theo...

I've published a few op-eds and on one occasion had a fact checker push back on an assertion I made, which forced a revision of the piece, and the piece was better for it and I was grateful to have a more accurate piece under by byline. None of this is hard. Don't print lies in the newspaper.
