I appreciate their candor to be honest about what many other companies are just quietly doing anyway. But I will no longer use their app. Language learning is a competitive space with many other options to look into.

Also, in the same breath that they say they're going to stop using contractors for work that AI can but also maintain that they deeply care about their employees. As someone who's been a contractor many times, this is just saying the quiet part out loud. They are second rate workers, disposable.

I've been trying to formulate my thoughts on Duolingo. In short, I'm disappointed. But I think the part that really irritates me is the fact that their core business is something essential to the human experience: language. It is extremely bold to go so far as to call yourself "AI-first".
